About the Role

The Styles desk is seeking an experienced editor to assign and edit daily news stories about the people, places and ideas that shape how we live now.

At Styles, we offer delight and discovery, and we revel in characters. Candidates need not be versed in high fashion, but the scope of coverage is wide; it includes pop culture, entertainment and internet trends, and the ability to find a Styles approach to the biggest news of the day is imperative. As the senior editor for news, you will be able to spot coverage opportunities before our competitors get to them. You will be able to quickly make assignments, and establish fresh angles on what’s trending. You will assign, shape and edit stories in a variety of formats, and should be creative and eager to experiment with new digital presentations for our journalism.

You will report to the Styles editor, and this will be a hybrid role, based in New York City.

Responsibilities:

  • Track news, shape coverage and ensure the right stories are covered and published on deadline

  • Manage staff writers of varying experience, helping them to develop their beats while contributing to the desk’s goals

  • Be an idea machine — conceive of fresh and compelling ways to cover trends

  • In consultation with the desk head and deputy, develop new systems, initiatives and series that enable the desk to cover news quickly

  • Assign and edit stories by multiple reporters each week

  • Find and cultivate freelance writers whose voices elevate the section

  • Strategize with visual editors from a story or project’s inception to publication

  • Ensure adherence to The Times’s editorial standards

  • Foster a collaborative culture that also meets The Times’s editorial standards

Basic Qualifications:

  • 10+ years in journalism with experience managing staff writers

  • Experience in a news organization, running multiple reporters

  • Proven track record of producing excellent journalism

  • Passionate and smart about pop culture and internet trends

  • Well-organized and highly skilled in editing a variety of story forms

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior work in a newsroom or for a lifestyle publication

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $140,000.00 and $160,000.00.
