The Staff Associate II will work at the Taub Institute and Sergievsky Center in an intergenerational study of memory and Alzheimer's disease. The Offspring Study is a longitudinal research project on biological and social determinants of cognitive aging. The study recruits racially and ethnically diverse participants with family roots in the Washington Heights/Hamilton Heights/Harlem/Inwood neighborhoods of northern Manhattan.
Responsibilities
The staff associate will perform telephone recruitment and in-person and remote assessment procedures of participants in a community-based intergenerational study of cognition. They will be responsible for facilitating all aspects of participant visits. The incumbent will be certified to assess capacity to consent and obtain informed consent following Institutional Review Board policies and regulations. The incumbent will perform remote and in-person interviews in the homes of study participants and at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, which will include administering standardized interviews of medical and family history, every-day functioning, neuropsychological testing, blood collection, and other standardized interviews. Data management duties include, and are not limited to, completing medical questionnaires, scoring assessments, organizing, filing, data entry and cleaning, photocopying materials and preparing biological samples. Other duties pertain to data processing and quality control. For example, the staff associate will be trained and certified on standard administration by observing other research staff, and obtaining consent, performing interviews, and administering questionnaires in the field under supervision. They will also manage compensation for study participation, schedule and re-schedule study visits, will escort participants to/from their home, and perform any other assigned duties. They will assist in the training of volunteers and new staff in administration of study forms and cognitive tests. Additionally, the staff associate will supervise the undergraduate research assistants. They will be trained and assist in ancillary study activities related to the main study. Familiarity with databases (i.e., REDCap, Citrix) is an asset.
The staff associate will work independently as well as part of a team and required to interact with diverse populations.
This work will take place under the limited supervision of the principal investigators and the Senior Project Coordinator.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in specific research field and 4 years recommended.
- Fluency in both Spanish and English
- The position requires excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, attention to detail and the ability to work independently. Proficiency in Microsoft Office required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a research setting and working with community-based research participants is a plus.
- Phlebotomy certification and/or experience with blood drawing is preferred, but not necessary.
- Ability to work flexible hours is required including some evenings, weekends, and remote.
