Transit Engineering Operations Leader – 8.27

The Global Engineering Operations team provides overall guidance to the Engineering ecosystem for operational practices and tools, to provide the best product safety, quality, delivery, cost, and talent for the business.

Elements of this Job Description include:

PEOPLE

Drive visibility of Engineering headcount across Transit Engineering. Provide visibility to Engineering leadership through dashboards or other automated source, that provides real-time information about quantity, demographics, etc. of Engineering population. Drive processes, tools, and compliance management around contingent workforce. This includes, but is not limited to, the definition and sustainability of the workforce used across Engineering, auditing processes, etc. to ensure that the most efficient and compliant usage of this flexible resource pool is utilized to drive quality, delivery, and cost. Support the deployment and sustaining of the Strategic Workforce Plan. Provide framework to the Engineering leadership for thinking through the 3–5-year plan for workforce gaps and needs to support technology development across their businesses.

PROCESSES/TOOLS

Driving operational tools and processes around resource planning. This can include, but is not limited to, consulting and project managing the execution of engineering demand processes, resources management tools, engineering demand planning tools, and time logging/vouchering tools across the businesses and sites. Driving processes and projects around Engineering tool license optimization. Ownership of optimizing the cost of tool licensing while also ensuring that the Engineering organization is equipped with the best toolbox to be efficient and productive. Identification of tool consolidation opportunities and understanding of tool roadmaps for pillar applications such as PLM, model-based design, etc. Project management of large tool implementation projects. Support the Transit Quality and System engineering director on the following topics:

  • Transit engineering Quality Management System, including the definition, training, and implementation of new processes in collaboration with different product lines stakeholders.

  • Internal audits and implementation of improvement actions.

  • Monitoring and reviewing engineering process performance indicators and governance indicators. Identify and implement actions for continuous improvement.

  • Management of the Transit Safety Board, driving effective closure of safety cases and overall reduction of safety cases.

  • Drive the development, application and continuous sharing of design good practices and lesson learned within Transit and across the organization.

The Transit Engineering Leader must display the following leadership skills throughout his/her tenure:

  • Self-driven initiative, consistent energy towards project execution and sense of urgency around deliverables.

  • Cross-business and cross-functional collaboration with demonstrated ability to work across, and not just within the Transit business (i.e., metric definitions must work across all businesses, not just w/in Transit).

  • Attention to detail with demonstrated ability to think through consequences of decisions, especially outside of Transit, since this is a corporate, global role.

  • Demonstrated success with working with various levels of engineering and business leaders at site, business unit and corporate levels.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage changing priorities from various leaders, agility, dotted-line management, influencing across businesses and navigating through complex organization structures.
