The Assistant Scientist in Dr. Gareth Thomas' lab provides technical support by performing scientific experiments within a research lab. Independently handles experiments or small research projects requiring advanced knowledge and experience in a specific scientific area or discipline. Maintains records of data, and may be involved in training graduate and medical students in research methods and procedures. Responsibilities include: maintaining a colony of laboratory mice, for record-keeping related to the colony and for communicating with other lab members regarding the colony status; mammalian tissue culture and standard molecular biology methods (e.g. restriction enzyme digests, ligations, plasmid DNA purification). In addition, the applicant will assist with inventorying and maintaining stocks of key laboratory supplies, verifying receipt of orders and maintaining a clean working environment. Performs other related duties as assigned. Required Education & Experience: Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Neuroscience, or related discipline and at least 2 years of laboratory research experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Required Skills & Abilities: *Prior experience with rodent handling, preferably genetically modified mice *Proficiency in tissue culture and/or molecular biology *Working knowledge of applicable computer software and applicable professional principles This is a grant funded position.
