Carmana Designs, Ltd. Cabinet and Millwork Finisher in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

A finisher works together with cabinetmakers to prepare a cabinet for the final stages of completion by sanding the wood, filling in any nicks, cracks or divots with wood putty and then applying a sealant. After the cabinetry is sealed, it is sanded again and then stained with a color or left natural and then top-coated with a matte, semi-gloss or gloss finish with polyurethane. The top urethane coat is then buffed to get any residual scratches out of it.Preparing cabinetry and millwork for stains and clear coatings is not all a finisher does. He must know how to apply the products with an HLVP spray gun (same as used in auto body shops). The finisher must keep the spray booth and paint mixing room clean and organized. He must order supplies when they are low such as masking paper and tape, sandpaper, PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as latex gloves, masks, goggles, respirators and zoot suits,.The paint booth must be kept clean, protective coatings need to be supplied to the paint booth walls and ceiling, light bulbs and filtration media need to be replaced when necessary and inventory needs to be performed monthly so no products run out.The finisher works directly with the cabinetmaking crew and will work alongside them in the shop sanding and preparing the cabinetry to enter the paint booth for final finishing.
