A Brief Overview A position is available in the laboratory of Ethan M. Goldberg, M.D., Ph.D., in the Division of Neurology at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The lab studies mechanisms of epilepsy and neurodevelopmental disorders using a range of techniques, including: human and mouse genetics; neurons and organoids generated from induced pluripotent stem cells from human patients with neurodevelopmental disorders; electrophysiology including voltage clamp of ionic currents in heterologous systems and acute brain slice in mouse; advanced microscopy including two-photon calcium imaging in vivo; and animal behavior.

The applicant will work with the Principle Investigator and research laboratory to lead a project(s), conduct experiments, generate data for manuscripts and grant applications, train and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, and maintain major equipment. The ideal candidate will be experienced, enthusiastic, self-driven, and committed to learning and working as part of a team. Specific prior experience with animal handling, animal surgeries such as stereotaxic injection; ion channel, cellular, and synaptic neurophysiology; and/or in vivo two-photon calcium imaging; is required. She or he will have excellent data recording, organizational, and communication skills, and the ability to multi-task.

What you will do Performs lab tests which require the analysis of results and interpretation of methods Assists with planning specific research protocols and procedures Assists in development & troubleshooting of new techniques and ideas Modifies methods and protocols under the direction of the PI Formulates and performs complex lab experiments, analyzes data & reports outcomes Presents & discusses work at regular lab meetings Prepares laboratory reagents and monitors and maintains inventory Performs calculations and maintains appropriate log books and lab notebooks Assists in writing methods and setting-up protocols accurately under the direction of the PI program director or senior scientist Assists with the maintenance of laboratory equipment, development of safety procedures and compliance records Researches journals, white papers and other scientific publications for pertinent information Assists with the preparation of materials for presentations, papers, grant applications, and conferences May oversee junior staff and/or laboratory workflow. May assist with lab administrative functions. Animal (mouse) husbandry (breeding, handling, surgical procedures, and genotyping) and colony maintenance Immunohistochemistry (mouse perfusion and fixation; vibratome, sliding microtome, and/or cryostat sectioning; light and confocal microscopy) Mouse behavioral training Molecular biology and biochemistry Cell culture and transfection Lab managerial and maintenance duties Assists faculty in the conduct of rese rch of significant value in the basic and/or translational science area Plans, conducts research projects within the federal, institutional regulations and policies Collaborates with researchers, external agencies and institutions to develop cooperative research initiatives Trains technical staff, students in lab procedures Drafts and reviews manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals Assists with the submission of grant applications, contracts and research projects funding Participates in free discussion, research progress, and overall lab morale Responsible for appropriate use of research funds May supervise students or other research staff as assigned Education Qualifications Bachelor's Degree Required Experience Qualifications At least three (3) years of directly relevant post grad scientific lab experience Required At least five (5) years of directly relevant post grad scientific lab experience Preferred Skills and Abilities Advanced knowledge in the use of a wide variety of lab techniques, research equipment and research related software Excellent verbal and written communications skills Excellent organizational skills Excellent critical thinking / problem-solving skills Excellent analytical skills
