UPMC Shaydside, a Magnet designated facility, is currently hiring a regular Full-Time Elder Life Nurse Specialist (ELNS) to support the Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP). HELP is a highly collaborative program in which nurses work closesly with hospital staff, patients, and families. Nurses in this position play a crucial role in the prevention of delirium in hospitaled older adults.

The ELNS is a Registered Nurse and is a member of the care delivery team. This role is responsible for preventing cognitive and physical decline in hospitalized patients age 70 or older.

Schedule:

  • Monday - Friday

  • 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Purpose:

Function as a role model for the delivery of nursing care to geriatric patients.

Responsibilities:

  • Daily new patient EMR review to identify risk factors and delirium.

  • Disseminates patient clinical information in a thorough and accurate manner to other program staff and volunteers.? Monitors patient infection information to ensure staff and volunteer safety.

  • Processing of patients discharged daily from HELP to ensure accurate monthly statistics. ? Geriatric nursing assessment of program patients, with implementation of nursing protocols for the program.

  • Provide delirium education to patients and families to alleviate caregiver stress and anxiety.

  • Provides timely, concise, and accurate clinical documentation in HELP database to non-clinical staff and volunteers.

  • Consultant to nursing staff to provide comprehensive geriatric assessment and interventions with emphasis on prevention of cognitive and functional decline.

  • Monitor patients interventions and outcomes, including delirium risk factors and high-risk medications, restraints and urinary catheters.

  • Continually reevaluate program interventions and outcomes to respond to patient care needs and outcomes.

  • Serve as a clinical resource and as a role model regarding geriatric nursing care.

  • Provide nursing staff regular didactic educational sessions, case conferences and one-to-one bedside teaching.

  • Provide clinical support to Elder Life Specialists and volunteers.

  • Attend and participate in monthly program meetings.

  • Asist with program expansion to other sites

  • Minimum 3 years nursing experience required.

  • BSN preferred.

  • Previous geriatric experience required

  • The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to geriatric patients.

  • They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patients status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patients' requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Registered Nurse (RN)
