Our Computing Services department is seeking a Principal Engineer to join the Virtualization and Storage team. This role entails overseeing system design and management within a central group responsible for supporting the University's complex, multi-user, university-wide systems. It involves ensuring that the long-term needs of systems operations and administration are integrated into the broader information systems planning. Additionally, this position may involve serving as a project lead for systems administration projects.

Depending on your unique combination of skills, experience, and interests, in combination with the evolving needs of the team, department, and University, you will have primary or secondary responsibilities for one of more of our focus areas:

Virtualized server infrastructure utilizing VMware vSphere (vCenter, ESXi).

Infrastructure monitoring and analysis using VMware Aria Operations and Aria Operations for Logs.

SAN and NAS storage infrastructure including hardware from Pure Storage, VAST Data, and Dell EMC making use of iSCSI, NFS, and Object protocols.

Virtualized Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) delivered with VMware Horizon.

Virtualized Application Infrastructure using Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (CVAD).

Your core responsibilities will include:

Working with enterprise systems that support the university-wide virtualized server, desktop and application environments.

Using existing monitoring tools and developing new tools to maintain the overall health of the infrastructure including scripting and automation with PowerCLI, Python, and/or REST APIs.

Diagnosing and identifying the root cause of failures including performance reductions, including working closely with vendors while pushing these issues to resolution.

Collaborating closely with other Computing Services teams on operating system, networking, and security challenges.

Participation in a rotating on-call schedule.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in a related field; Master's preferred.

A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

5+ years of system administration experience demonstrating application of the above and supporting technologies (e.g. networking).

Strong problem solving, reasoning, and technical skills.
