The Opportunity

This position works out of our Plano, Texas location in the Neuromodulation Division. Our Neuromodulation business includes implantable devices compatible with mobile technology to help people who suffer from chronic pain and movement disorders. These non-opioid therapies allow us to provide interventional pain therapy to patients throughout the pain continuum.

It sounds like science fiction: sending small electrical pulses to the spine to block pain signals or to the brain to suppress tremor. As a Material Engineer/Scientist at Abbott Neuromodulation, you will have the opportunity to develop technology platforms that improve the lives of those suffering from chronic pain and movement disorders.

You will work closely with advanced development, mechanical engineering, and process development teams to select the right polymers for our future implantable devices that ensure long-term performance and manufacturability.

What You’ll Work On

  • Researches, develops, designs, and evaluates mechanical and electro-mechanical materials, components, assemblies, processes and/or equipment.

  • Responsible for material characterization of raw materials, in-process samples, & finished goods using imaging technology, element analysis & spectrometry.

  • Identifies materials-driven risks based on manufacturing processes/patient-use and means to quantify risks.

  • Independently conceives, executes, and communicate novel multi-disciplinary research strategies that achieve project and area goals.

  • Generates new scientific proposals and lead those efforts.

  • Anticipates and critically evaluates scientific advances or competitive threats and responds with appropriate new strategies.

  • Serves as a lead on his/her own projects and contribute scientific insights into multiple other projects.

  • Incorporates peer-reviewed literature into own research and recommendations.

  • Demonstrates excellent record of accomplishment of scientific and business objectives.

  • Develops productive collaborations and communication with other materials experts across divisions within the organization and with scientists outside of Abbott.

Required Qualifications

  • Provides guidance in the preparation of unusual and/or challenging tasks for the specific type of analysis required or requested (FEM, SEM, EDS, FTIR, Raman, TGA, DMA, DSC or other instruments relating to materials analysis).

  • Strong history of cross-functional collaboration with other engineering disciplines.

  • Experience in developing new technology and new applications in the field.

  • Experience in both materials characterization and regulatory affairs to support product approval filing and marketing.

  • Knowledge of polymers in the implantable medical device field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of relevant product development or R&D experience (preferably with implantable hardware)

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Polymer Science/Engineering, or equivalent

  • Advanced degree preferred

The base pay for this position is $72,700.00 – $145,300.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
