We’re looking for a detail focussed Software Engineer to join our Rail Infrastructure, Mobile Communications team! The Mobile Communications business supplies on-board GSM-R equipment and other engineering solutions to rail industry operators and suppliers worldwide. This includes the GSM-R cab radio with GPS and LTE connectivity and the GSM-R data radio. We have earned a respected reputation in the industry which has developed because of our success in delivering to our customers. In addition, we are leading the way within the railway industry in developing the next generation of rail communications (Future Railway Mobile Communication System), based on 4G and 5G technology, so this is a great time for you to join the business in the development of a new, exciting technology.

You’ll make a difference by

  • Leading engineering work packages with possible team leadership, ensuring adherence to defined budgets, timescales, and scope, including managing subcontractors.

  • Providing systems engineering expertise, offering timely guidance to projects and bids across all phases, from analysis and design to validation, test, and on-site commissioning support.

  • Assisting in sales engineering by proposing technical solutions for bids and tenders, adeptly handling interactions with customers and suppliers.

  • Taking on development engineering responsibilities for intricate technical projects, covering the entire product development lifecycle within the relevant domain.

  • Participating in product demonstrations and trials for internal partners and customers.

  • Leveraging experience to estimate costs, contribute to project planning, and ensuring achievement of budget, timescale, quality, and performance targets.

Your success will be grounded by

  • Your Degree or equivalent in a relevant area.

  • Proven expertise with C/C++ Familiarity with DevOps practices and a keen interest in their application.

  • Knowledge or hands-on experience with agile development processes.

  • Proficiency in using and developing for Linux environments.

  • Background in network communications.

  • Expertise in developing Qt GUI applications for embedded targets.

  • Experience with compositors and Wayland.

  • Adherence to secure coding practices.

  • Familiarity with GSM, GSM-R, 4G, or 5G technologies.

  • Previous exposure to the rail industry.

  • C, C++, gcc, gdb

  • Docker

  • VS Code

  • Boost test framework, gcov, QtTest

  • Yocto, bitbake

  • CppCheck
