​​Within Azure Data, the databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational Database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable multitude of applications across various industries. We are on a journey to enable developer friendly, mission-critical, AI enabled operational Databases across relational, non-relational and OSS offerings.​

​​Join our dynamic team at Azure Database for PostgreSQL, one of Microsoft Azure's fastest growing relational database services. As we continue to expand our offerings across different markets, and meet the ever-growing demands of our customers, we are seeking a Principal Software Engineer who thrives on the challenges that come with running online database services.

In this role you will manage projects that improve availability, scalability, query performance, storage and networking optimizations, and operating systems integration. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with partner teams, working across boundaries to create innovative first-party integrations for Open-Source Databases on Azure.

Responsibilities

  • ​​Leads coding, design and architectural activities across different layers of the product’s offerings.

  • Leads efforts to optimize, debug, refactor, and reuse code to improve performance and maintainability, effectiveness, and return on investment (ROI).

  • Partners with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project manager, technical lead) to determine user requirements. Leverages a variety of feedback channels to incorporate insights into future designs or solution fixes.

  • Leads by example and mentors engineers to produce extensible and maintainable code used across products. Creates and applies metrics to drive the quality and stability of code, as well as appropriate coding patterns and best practices.

  • Leads efforts to enhance, reuse, contribute to, and identify new software developer tools to support other programs and applications to create, debug, and maintain code across products.

  • Drives services from inception to delivery and beyond, holds accountability as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) and mentors other engineers across products/solutions, working on call to monitor system/product/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions.​

Qualifications

Required /Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter

Preferred/Additional Qualifications

  • Professional experience with at least one relational database systems. Deep systems background with solid fundamentals in OS and databases.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Azure, AWS, or similar cloud computing platforms

  • High enthusiasm, integrity, ingenuity, results-orientation, self-motivation, and resourcefulness in a fast-paced production environment.

  • Experience mentoring other engineers successfully

  • Experience with Azure's Control Plane technologies.

  • Master Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline and 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to Java, C++ or C#.

  • 3+ years of technical leadership experience in a software team

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
