Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering team is leading the transformation of analytics in the world of data with products like databases, data integration, big data analytics, messaging & real-time analytics, and business intelligence. The products our portfolio include Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL DB, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI. Within Azure Data, the databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational Database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable multitude of applications across various industries. We are on a journey to enable developer friendly, mission-critical, AI enabled operational Databases across relational, non-relational and OSS offerings.

The SQL Core team is hiring a principal software engineering manager to help guide our connectivity and control planes to the next generation of reliability and scalability. We operate a planet scale service and have to meet a high standard of service excellence because we are used by enterprise grade applications. We have to rearchitect and improve the service while operating it.

Responsibilities

  • Grow and guide the team to meet the following challenges, while improving D&I.

  • Design and implement capabilities that will ensure SQL DB microservices will perform in the Azure newest hardware generations, including Cobalt.

  • Design and implement the next phase of connectivity, scalability, and reliability features of SQL DB to help propel the next wave of fundamental capabilities for our cloud databases offerings.

  • Develop a cross-cutting technical direction and strategic planning for product development, feature enhancement and innovation in alignment with the business objectives.

  • Stay updated on recent trends in the database world with a focus on networking, reliability, scalability, and security, and be open to experimenting with promising trends on these focus areas that might open up new avenues of growth for SQL DB.

  • Provide guidance and mentor engineers, enabling them to succeed in the team and the space.

  • Conduct code reviews and help shape and steer the team coding guidelines.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to C++, C#, Java, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 5+ years of experience with backend, storage, or database development in distributed systems environment. 

  • 4+ years people management experience.

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • Experience leading teams of size 15+ people.

  • Understanding of distributed systems and/or Operating System and/or experience with Databases, Software Defined Networking and Storage systems are highly preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience leading high-performing engineering teams that work on system software is preferred.

Software Engineering M6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $161,600 - $286,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $209,600 - $314,400 per year.
