Deputy Sheriffs are trained as Jail Officers, Courtroom Security Officers, and Civil Process Officers. The Sheriffs Office offers additional career opportunities through the following specialized positions: Honor Guard Unit, Transportation Officer, Inmate/Resident Community Services Crew, Certified Law Enforcement Instructors, and Classification Officer. All new Deputy Sheriffs appointed by the Sheriff are assigned to the Division of Jail Operations and perform the duties of a Jail Officer before becoming eligible for other assignments that may become available with the Sheriffs Office. This is a sworn Law Enforcement position appointed by the Sheriff of the City of Richmond. Deputies initially work within the Richmond City Justice Center and are responsible for the security and welfare of any person legally remanded to the custody of the Richmond City Sheriffs Office, as well as members of the public that visit and conduct business at the Richmond City Justice Center. Deputy Sheriffs assigned to Uniform Operations work one of the following shifts: Day Shift 0630 - 1900 hours Night Shift 1830 - 0700 hours Deputies may be required to work overtime and are subject to have their shift assignment changed, based on need of personnel, at the discretion of the Commander of Uniform Operations. A Deputy Sheriff, working within the Uniform Operations Division, reports directly to the Sector Sergeant or Shift Supervisor. Applicants must meet the minimum requirements: must be 21 years of age; must be a U.S. citizen; must have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent; must have a valid drivers license with driving record in good standing; must have no domestic violence convictions, felony convictions, serious misdemeanors or misdemeanors involving moral turpitude, or felony nolle prosse charges; and must undergo an extensive background investigation, credit history check, polygraph examination, and medical examination/drug screening through the Richmond City Sheriffs Office.
