Our Company Universal is headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, and is the leading global leaf tobacco supplier. Tobacco sourcing and processing has been the Company's principal focus since its founding in 1918. The largest portion of the Company's business involves procuring and processing flue-cured, burley, and dark air-cured leaf tobacco for manufacturers of consumer tobacco products. Over the past few years, Universal has expanded its business through a series of acquisitions to develop a plant-based ingredients business segment to support the food and beverage markets which will provide future growth opportunities for Universal. Summary As the Manager, Environmental, Health and Safety at Universal, you will oversee the global Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) program of Universal Leaf Tobacco Co., Inc.

What You'll Be Doing (Essential Duties)

  • Manage and implement environmental, health, and safety (EHandS) programs which include hazard identification evaluation and control, accident/injury prevention, hazardous materials/waste management, emergency preparedness, ergonomics, and industrial hygiene
  • Keep abreast of current and proposed EHS regulations - both U.S. (OSHA/EPA) and international.
  • Audit global ULT facilities related to EHS performance and report audit findings to both local and corporate management. Monitor progress towards resolution of audit findings.
  • Perform or assist with accident investigations as needed.
  • Functional leadership for the global EHS Team.
  • Maintain the ULT global safety program database, setting targets, directing, coaching, and reporting results.
  • Develop and implement EHS programs, including Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) to improve global compliance and performance.

Minimum Requirements

  • College degree, preferably in an EHS, engineering, or technical related program.
  • At least five (5) years' experience in the EHS field.
  • High level of commitment to developing excellence in technical and/or business skills.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft applications.
  • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills.
  • Adaptable to frequent changes in climate, environment, workload, and schedules.
  • Extensive travel required up to 40% of the work year.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience and proficiency in Behavior-Based Safety practices.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
