University of Rochester Bereavement Specialist II in Rochester, New York

GENERAL PURPOSE:

The Bereavement Specialist II will meet selected families who have lost children or anticipate the loss of a child and are struggling to cope with the loss. The Bereavement Specialist will assess the level of need and determine an appropriate course of action to include individualized/group counseling or referring to a family therapist, psychiatrist, or psychologist for more intensive intervention. The Bereavement Specialist will serve as a liaison with nursing groups including floor nurses, residents and social workers, and between Pediatric Divisions to develop a system to identify newly bereaved families and provide ongoing follow up. The Bereavement Specialist will be responsible for providing an overview of grief and bereavement including education, guidance and screening for nurses, floor nurses, and residents on a regular basis to ensure their understanding of grief and complicated grief with, but not limited to, a review of selected patients. As part of Pediatric Palliative Care, the Bereavement Specialist will participate in multidisciplinary palliative care meetings and health team rounds.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Support bereaved families – Communicate (in person, phone, email and/or a combination of) with selected families who have lost children or families who anticipate the loss of their child (generally families whom the staff feels are struggling more than most); assess whether they are suffering from complicated grief, support them on an ongoing basis, and determine whether a referral to a family therapist, psychiatrist or psychologist is necessary.

Coordinating bereavement follow-up for all divisions of clinical care within the Department of Pediatrics – Meet regularly with the nursing groups including floor nurses, residents and social workers in each subspecialty division in the Department of Pediatrics; work with them to develop a system to identify newly bereaved families, and to provide ongoing follow-up of bereaved families.

Education of staff on bereavement – Meet with nurses and social workers in each division, as well as floor nurses and residents and provide overview of grief and bereavement; provide education and guidance on how to support bereaved families and how to screen for complicated grief and when to make a referral; coordinate grief series workshops and/or arrange support groups; continue to meet with teams on a regular basis, review selected patients with them, and review their understanding of grief and complicated grief.

Attending multidisciplinary palliative care meetings and health team rounding meetings – Attend weekly Pediatric Palliative Care meetings, as well as regular meetings on the pediatric floors, PICU, and NICU.

Database administration – Maintain and update database to track patient deaths based on notification from nursing groups including floor nurses, residents and social workers in subspecialty divisions in the Department of Pediatrics.

Community Relations – Works with internal and external partners to improve relationships and broaden impact of bereavement services. Includes work with parent advisory group, funeral directors and website oversight.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree with course work in an appropriate health, social or technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.

  • Two to three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.

  • Experience working with families who have lost a child; experience supporting bereaved families; experience working with staff whose patients have died required.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills required.

  • Database experience desired.

  • Must have reliable/efficient transportation as this position will be expected to make home visits.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $46,987 - $65,790 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
