JOB SUMMARY: WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor provides basic breastfeeding information and support to pregnant and breastfeeding participants. Are available to WIC participants outside usual clinic hours and outside the WIC clinic environment to counsel prenatal and postpartum participants via email, phone, hospital visits, and face-to-face. Peer Counselors refer participants to the Designated Breastfeeding Expert (DBE), QN/CPA, or other community breastfeeding resources for situations outside the peer counselors scope of practice. Peer Counselors are expected to follow up on participant referrals in a timely manner and document interactions and referrals to other staff in the management information system (MIS).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must be a current or former WIC participant. Must have breastfed at least one baby. Good organizational and communication skills required. Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality necessary. Understanding of cultural sensitivity and demonstrated ability to work with diversepeople. Typingand computer skills required. Fulfill expectations of advancing professional knowledge and skillsets by attending relevant seminars and/or trainings. Exemplify a demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion work and delivering services with a trauma-informed and equitable lens Valid NYS Driver License
