University of Utah Health Dermatology-MOHS Technician in SALT LAKE CITY, Utah

This position will be responsible for using specialized skills in assisting with MOHS surgery within the dermatology clinics. The position will also ensure optimal, efficient flow of patients while ensuring high quality of service. It will also serve as a principal EpicCare super user and will be responsible for leading the clinical staff by providing mentoring and training. This position provides direct patient care and may be required to access and administer medications within their scope of practice and according to state law.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews and prepares patient paperwork, reviewing path reports and notations to determine the site(s) to be addressed in surgery.

  • Verifies and arranges all supplies and instruments ensuring the surgical trays are setup for daily procedures. Maintains trays for sterilization.

  • Conducts MOHS surgical procedures, wound care, pre/post wound procedures, and other highly skilled dermatology related procedures.

  • Facilitates improvement projects within the clinic in coordination with the clinic care team.

  • Ensures efficient clinic work flow by pre-planning patient visits and reviewing the daily schedule.

  • Serves as a primary preceptor for new staff and provides ongoing support and mentoring for all clinical staff.

  • Performs as the principal EpicCare super-user providing support and training for staff and providers and attends ongoing training and updates, as available.

  • Performs medical scribes transcription related tasks such as inputting patient data, recording examination results, chart preparation in an accurate and thorough manner.

  • May coordinate referrals and obtain pre-authorization from insurance companies for procedures and treatments.

  • May complete patient registration, assists patient with co-pays and account balances, and reconcile daily cash reports.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Demonstrated leadership skills including critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making.

  • Ability to act as the chief role model for clinical staff exhibiting behavior qualities as defined in the PROMISE standards.

  • Ability to prioritize patient flow and the needs of the clinic.

  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.

  • Ability to understand a pathology report and different types of tumors addressed with MOHS surgery.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to review data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.

  • Demonstrated knowledge in computer programs such as EpicCare or any other clinical program.

  • Demonstrated phlebotomy skills, lab specimen handling, surgical preparation and processing skills.

Qualifications

Qualifications Required

  • One year of experience as a Certified Medical Assistant or in MOHS surgery.

  • Successful completion of the in-house MOHS surgery training and competency checklist within six months of hire.

Licenses Required

  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.

  • One of the following

  • Current Advanced EMT certification with the State of Utah.

  • Current certification to practice as a Paramedic in the State of Utah.

  • Current certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through AAMA

  • Currently credentialed in ABR-OE (Assessment-Based Recognition in Order Entry) through AAMA.

  • Current certification as a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through AMT

  • Current certification as a National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) through NCCT.

  • Current Clinical Medical Assistant Certification through NHA.

  • Current certification as a NRCMA - Medical Assistant through the National Association for Health Professionals.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.

  • This position involves intermediate working conditions in a healthcare setting that may exert up to 50 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving patients or objects, such as medical equipment, while providing patient care. Workers in this position may be exposed to infectious diseases and may be required to function around prisoners or behavioral health patients.
