Job Summary

Provide key project and supervisory support for the Head of Digital Operations. This includes leading a small team of part-time technicians, acting as liaison with clients when projects launch, and staying current with the latest digitization technologies, equipment, and techniques.

This individual will be responsible for creating and managing files for use in online collections of the J. Willard Marriott Library. This job requires converting from analog A/V formats to digital formats from a wide range of media, including film, cassette tape, reel to reel, beta, VHS , umatic and more. It also includes post processing and editing of digital files. Some troubleshooting of hardware and software issues may also be required. Must work and communicate well in a team environment.

Duties may entail technical planning, development, integration, verification, validation, and support for software tools and applications. This individual will be required to coordinate projects with various library departments, university clients, and clients external to campus in a professional and timely manner that enhances and expands the Marriott Digital Library.

Requires specialist knowledge for handling and digitizing rare materials and transparencies, including photograph negatives, slides and prints.

This position is required to work on campus full-time. Telecommuting will only be authorized for occasional/exceptional circumstances.

Responsibilities

Organizing, coordinating, and launching patron related digital production projects and processes. This entails meeting with and developing workflows alongside various library departments, campus patrons, and patrons external to campus that wish to utilize our digital asset management system to showcase their unique scholarly material.

Supervising and evaluating a small team of technicians and their production projects related to digitization processes.

Producing, editing, organizing and loading digital objects into digital asset database. The production process includes, but is not limited to digitizing various analog mediums using digital scanners, recorders, and cameras as well as post-processing files to meet online and/or archival needs.

Importing items into an online digital asset management system and performing quality control. Creating preservation grade digital files, as well as formats suitable for online web access.

The organization process includes, but is not limited to setting up project spreadsheets to track progress and quality control from initial digitization to final ingest into the digital library and archive. Training, supervising, and evaluating staff. Monitoring equipment’s efficiency and output. Ensuring that damaged and/or fragile material receive proper handling, care, and conservation treatments. Developing timelines, schedules, and processes to complete projects. Applying adequate quality control measures. Meeting deadlines and customer specifications while staying within budget.

Other duties and projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field plus two years experience in performing professional media-related services, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Specific skills in photography, editing, writing, and/or video and audio production required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

Preferences

  • Experience working with varied and changing technologies.

  • Experience handling rare media materials.

  • Working knowledge of digital content management systems.

  • Working knowledge of cameras, lighting techniques, scanners and familiarity with post-processing software such as Adobe Suite.

  • Demonstrated leadership, project management and training skills.

  • Ability to transport, assemble, maintain, and troubleshoot equipment used in multimedia production.

  • Demonstrated proficiency and capability with information technology systems in the context of an academic library.
