Job/Position DescriptionThe Network Specialist I will perform moderately complex (journey-level) computer systems support work and installations. This work involves providing excellent customer support for agency information technology systems and operating automated office equipment in a stand-alone, network, or cloud environment. On occasion will be required to train and assist customers. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of self-initiative and use independent judgment.Remote (telework) Work Policy: Candidates understand the nature of IT deskside/onsite support as described and will not be provided remote work opportunity until after a 6-month probationary period ends and employee is retained to continue with HHSC IT. After which time only two days a week will be allowed to remote work (Tuesday/Thursday). Candidates understand that remote work is a privilege and may be withdrawn at any time in addition to occasional Tuesday/Thursday scheduling of customer support may be required. There are no exceptions to this policy.Essential Job FunctionsExpected to work a predictable work schedule from 8AM-5PM M-F. On occasion is available to work afterhours and weekends when work dictates afterhours support and on call in the event of emergencies, unexpected disasters for customer support. Communicates with vendors, customers, management, and network support teams. Serves as local contact for remote network locations to obtain clarification of problems and to identify solutions or corrective actions. Provides customer service and answers customer inquiries regarding computer software, hardware operation, and the use and interface of systems and software applications and provides end user support and training in the use of available hardware, software, and utilities. Troubleshoots and resolves computer-related problems. Sets up computer equipment for employee use and performs or ensures proper installation of cables, operating systems, or appropriate software. Installs, maintains, moves, and assists in testing and upgrading new and existing hardware or software. Assists in maintaining the local area network or wide area network, cable and switches installations, and inventories. Performs procedures for backup, recovery, and archival of files stored on the network. Communicates with vendors, customers, management, and network support teams. Assists in maintaining the network's physical and logical structures and in installing and testing hardware and software. Assists in performance tuning and capacity planning activities to enhance the performance of the network resources and in maintaining network support software. Assists in or conducts product evaluations of upgraded or new hardware and software and identifies strengths, weaknesses, and potential benefits to the agency. Assists in maintaining the operating system and security software utilized on the network, including the addition of new users to the network and establishment of rights and privileges. Must have reliable transportation with the appropriate insurance coverage and a valid Driverand#146;s License from state of residence and capable of transporting computer/network equipment to complete work requests. This work includes new installations and computer moves (Change Requests) to complete short term projects and for direct involvement with the planning and successful completion of long term projects.
