We currently have an exciting position for an experienced Nuclear Engineer to support our Nuclear Technologies and Materials (NTM) division in San Diego, CA. Under limited direction, this position exercises considerable latitude in analyzing and evaluating advanced reactor designs with respect to fuel qualification. This position will require a working knowledge of reactor neutronics and fuel performance and will interface with thermal fluid engineers to progress the overall reactor design and development. This position will also work to develop innovative irradiation plans and engineering solutions to meet complex requirements for the GA-EMS Fast Modular Reactor.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Independently performs difficult/complex engineering work with instructions as to the general expected results.

  • Provides practical solutions to technical engineering problems in reactor nuclear design, manufacturing and operation to support startup, full power operation, shutdown and accident response on the nuclear reactor core.

  • Documents findings and communicates reports and technical presentations at engineering meetings, and participates in program reviews.

  • Provides technical support to licensing related activities and requirements.

  • Provides support and guidance to other moderately experienced staff members working on engineering analyses for thermal/fluids analysis, nuclear systems evaluations and core/assembly analysis.

  • Supports future NTM engineering needs and actions required to accomplish technical goals.

  • Addresses nuclear fuel performance-related technical issues requiring novel and creative approaches to ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of work that resolves unusual or complex engineering problems.

  • May assume technical responsibility for the success of key projects.

  • Be a focal point for technical communication with Company management and may represent the Company as a technical contact to customers and/or government regulatory agencies.

  • May coordinate segments of a specific project and may have frequent inter-organization and customer contact on technical issues.

  • Provides direction to technical staff including moderately experienced professional staff.

  • Maintains the strict confidentiality of sensitive information.

  • Works in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; six or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, four or more years of experience with a masters degree, or two or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.

  • Must possess complete understanding and knowledge of reactor design and specialized knowledge of nuclear reactor core physics during startup, operation, and accidents which should include some of the following:

  • Fuel performance analysis – evaluation of fuel behavior during irradiation including fuel fracture, fission gas generation/release, multidimensional contact/deformation and cladding stresses.

  • Nuclear systems evaluations – steady state operation, reactivity transients, loss of flow and loss of coolant evaluations and protection systems response.

  • Core/assembly analysis – reactor core power distribution, shutdown margin, and core reactivity depletion analysis supporting fuel cycle assessment and safety analysis.

  • Computer code expertise including NEAMS tools with preference for BISON & MOOSE, MCNP, and NRC computer codes.

  • Must have a complete understanding of nuclear engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and, expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in nuclear design and nuclear physics.

  • Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and, determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.

  • Must have excellent communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team; able to perform complex tasks; and, lead a team of less experienced professional employees.

  • Able to work extended hours as required.

  • Prior experience design or operating a research, test, US Navy, or commercial nuclear reactor is desirable.

  • A Professional Engineering License is desirable.

  • Must be a US Citizen or US Person
