Department:  Facilities

Job Purpose:

The Caretaker is responsible for the general maintenance and cleaning of the Retreat Center facility. Specific areas of responsibilities include housekeeping, minor laundry, events set up and grounds work around the facilities. Provide access to buildings for scheduled events and securing premises after completion of events. Caretaker is considered essential personnel and is expected to be available in the event of emergencies.

Essential Duties

  • Performs all types of general maintenance duties both inside and outside of the facilities and sets up furniture and furnishings for scheduled events
  • Performs mopping, stripping, waxing, and buffing of resilient and wood floor surfaces
  • Maintains room furnishings and perform minor repairs as needed
  • Observes and reports, through the work order system, all defects, deterioration, and wear and tear on the Retreat facilities
  • Performs grass cutting, tree trimming, lawn raking, snow removal and grounds maintenance using powered equipment such as tractors, weed whackers, chain saws, and powered lawn mowers and snow blowers, snow plowing of parking lots
  • Communicates and coordinates with the Supervisor and, at times, staff on special events setups and functions that may require special furnishing arrangements and other duties that may be required; ensures access to the building for all scheduled events and securing of the premises after such events is required
  • Inspects all buildings and grounds on a routine basis and assure that deficiencies are corrected
  • Performs planting and maintenance of landscaping materials including seasonal flowers, shrubs, and mulching
  • Upkeep o all grounds equipment and keeping it operational for the retreat center
  • Performs minor repair/replacement tasks on mechanical, plumbing, and electrical fixtures; monitors the heating and air conditioning systems to ensure the systems are working properly
  • All types of general maintenance duties both inside and outside of the building
  • General cleaning of sleeping rooms, shower rooms, kitchen, restrooms, storage areas, chapel, dining room, and all public spaces
  • Cleaning of light fixtures and air diffusers; relamping of lights
  • Window washing, Power Washing of building, cleaning rain gutters
  • Trash removal
  • Responsible for the setup of dock area during the summer including bouys for swimming areas, labeling the dock, and gathering weekly water samples

Additional Skills Required

  • Possess and maintain a valid Pennsylvania driver's license.
  • Possess good communication skills, with the ability to express ideas, orally and in writing
  • Possess good problem solving skills
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
  • Must be willing to seek training to enhance or learn new skills
  • Must be accessible and available in the event of emergencies or when needed to meet the ongoing mission of the University
  • Possess basic traits of self-motivation, honesty, integrity, loyalty, and confidentiality
  • Must be able to lift materials, including bags of ice melt, rock salt fertilizer and other materials, tables, and equipment that weigh 50 pounds

*Minimum Education Requirements: * High school diploma or equivalent

Minimum Job Experience Requirements: Three (3) years experience in the care and maintenance of similar facilities

Schedule/Work Hours:  Tuesday through Saturday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.  Full Time, 12 month
