POSITION PURPOSE
The Senior Student Activities Advisor in the Student Activities Office (SAO) provides advice and guidance to student government entities, and Registered Student Organization (RSO) members and leaders regarding leadership, event planning and management. The SAO Senior Student Activities Advisor is assigned to either the Events & Programming team or the Leadership & Organizations team but will have duties across all functional areas.

The SAO Senior Student Activities Advisor performs advanced administrative duties related to their assigned team to ensure services are provided to students in a timely and efficient manner. The Senior Student Activities Advisor provides coaching, counseling, and guidance to students with diverse academic, social, political and cultural perspectives.

Promising candidates will possess a passion for working in a student-centered environment with a student development theory-driven practice, fostering student success through teaching and learning; and possess the ability to make sound administrative decisions through collaborative processes to advance the HUB’s mission and strategic goals. Reports to one of the two Assistant Directors of SAO and serves as a member of the SAO and HUB team.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ADVISING STUDENT GOVERNMENT AND STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS (55%)

  • Serve as primary advisor for assigned Associated Students of the University of Washington (ASUW) and Graduate and Professional Student Senate (GPSS) officers and employees (such as ASUW commissions, entities, committees, and Board/Executive officers).

  • Serve as advisor for assigned Registered Student Organizations, usually in categories based on RSO type, such as cultural, international, academic, performing arts, political/social action, business, engineering, Fraternities/Sororities, recreation/sports groups or special interest.

  • Assists students with planning, budgeting, promotions, execution, management, and assessment of RSO-hosted events/initiatives in assigned functional area such as lectures, concerts, cultural programs, event fairs, dances, and workshops.

  • Monitor and advise student government program directors and RSOs regarding day-to-day operations, which could include personnel issues, risk management, financial transactions, contracts, programs, and campus services.

  • Serves as a primary liaison between RSOs/ASUW/GPSS entities advised by this position and campus staff, campus departments, other student groups/entities, vendors, outside groups. Advocate for RSOs and student government across campus.

  • Solves problems as a mediator, facilitator regarding policy violations and disciplinary issues.

  • Interpret University and state policies, procedures, and regulations, and other legal requirements as they relate to the student government and student organizations and ensure compliance in all RSO and student government matters.

  • Advise Assistant Director on emerging and ongoing issues among student organizations and student government.

  • Assist supervisor with assigned functional areas of oversight: Events & Programming or Leadership & Organizations.

  • Develop and implement on-going information sessions and trainings in specialty areas such as major events, leadership or other engagement areas.

  • Develop, implement and assess educational materials and presentations on RSO policies and protocols.

  • Communicate and present complex information across multiple platforms (social media, email, websites, in-person, etc.) to a diverse audience, including students, staff, faculty and the public.

  • Maintain current and historical records for all programs. Prepare quarterly and annual reports.

  • As part of the SAO team, coordinate and/or assist a variety of HUB and campus-wide facility sponsored events.

  • Serves on HUB and University committees, workgroups, and taskforces as assigned.

  • Other duties as assigned.FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT (15%)

  • Create, monitor, track, adjust, and forecast assigned departmental budgets.

  • Assist with development and monitoring of all budgets of assigned GPSS/ASUW entities and RSOs for compliance with applicable policies and procedures.

  • Create and monitor budget processes and work closely with student managers on day-to-day operations for student government enterprises, such as Rainy Dog Radio, ASUW Food Co-op, Bean Basket and Bike Shop. IMPACT TO THE UNIVERSITY The Senior Advisor is an active and visible member of the SAO team, often collaborating with other departments on campus and in frequent contact with students.

  • Responsible for advising key entities in student government and guiding students through their leadership experience.

  • Direct oversight of engagement for student leaders in order to enhance the Husky Experience.

  • Development and management of budgets.

  • Planning and execution of new initiatives, including collaboration with other departments and off-campus partners. POSITION COMPLEXITIES Candidates will possess an in-depth knowledge of student development, student activities best practices, and personnel management. Knowledge of University policies and procedures, and state/federal/local laws as they apply to student organizations and student government are essential. Candidates will be a strategic leader and contributing member of a team, manage projects and people with the highest level of integrity, display an extreme attention to detail, and have a proven track record of executing a strategic vision. SUPERVISION This position reports to and works under the general supervision of one of the two Assistant Directors in SAO. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES None. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Bachelor’s degree in Student Affairs, Counseling, or a related field and 2 years related experience as a professional in the fields of Higher Education, College Unions/Student Activities, Non-profit Management, or related field.Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.Additional minimum requirements:

  • Experience advising student organizations.

  • Experience with event planning and management in a professional capacity.

  • Possess interpersonal, problem solving, and customer service skills to work effectively with a diverse group of students, faculty, the general public and colleagues.

  • Ability to write reports, analyses, and evaluations.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

  • Equivalent combination and experience may substitute for required qualifications. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree in Student Affairs, Counseling, or related field.

  • 2+ years’ related experience as a professional in the fields of Higher Education, College Unions/Student Activities, Non-profit Management, or related field.

  • Experience in advising student organizations in a higher education setting.

  • Experience working directly with student leaders and student government in a higher education setting.

  • Working knowledge of computer applications for publishing, image handling, and web production, including Adobe

  • Creative Suite and web content management systems. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT This is an overtime eligible position. Position works with oversight from the Assistant Director. Evening and weekend hours may be necessary. Schedule can be flexible and allows hybrid/work from home up to 8 hours (1 day) per week, with the on-site job hours being performed in an office setting, with some on-site event management.
