The Modern Applications Business Unit (MAPBU) of VMware has an objective to modernize the way customers build, run, and manage their most important applications. In support of that objective, MAPBU has created Tanzu, a portfolio of Kubernetes focused products.

The Tanzu Trust team was formed because we believe that delivering a trusted application platform begins by refreshing the Three R’s of Security (https://tanzu.vmware.com/content/blog/the-three-r-s-of-enterprise-security-rotate-repave-and-repair) (Rotate, Repair, and Repave) with a modern perspective, enforcing least privilege access patterns from the foundation up. Technologies like SPIFFE (https://spiffe.io/) will be a crucial part of this foundation; enabling the modernization of credential management and distribution, as well as the integration of software supply chain security features into the platform.

We are partnering with our customers to anticipate tomorrow’s capability gaps and technology needs. We aim to solve the most critical trust challenges facing Modern Application Platforms by delivering a seamless and integrated trust experience for the Tanzu Portfolio through attestation and authentication.

Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

  • You have become familiar with the team’s technical domain and the trust challenges facing products within the Tanzu portfolio

  • You are using your knowledge of our technical domain to advise and influence cross-team collaborations

  • Provide technical guidance as we solicit product feedback from customers. Ensure what we're building meets the expectations of reliability, scaling, and security

  • You are actively engaged in helping the team build an iterative development process that prioritizes fast feedback loops, asking questions, and learning from mistakes.

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

In this role, you become an expert within MAPBU on securing Kubernetes and communications between services running both within and off-cluster.

You will:

  • Collaborate with your PM & manager to define identity toolsets and APIs that will apply across the Tanzu products.

  • Collaborate with various Open Source Software communities to create features addressing customer needs (e.g. Kubernetes, SPIFFE, etc).

  • Create Kubernetes components that will serve as reference implementations for other teams and ship as part of production commercial offerings.

  • Bring innovative ideas to complex technical solutions and write code using Golang and declarative programming with Kubernetes Controllers/CRDs.

  • Work with other functions including program management, quality and site reliability engineers to improve the product.

What is leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

The hiring manager for this role is Jeremy Morony, Engineering Manager for the Tanzu Run Identity & Auth Program. Jeremy is a technical leader with 20 years of programming, facilitation, coaching, and mentoring experience at both startups and larger companies. He has worked in MAPBU since December 2019.

The Tanzu Trust team is a distributed team with colleagues across all time zones in the United States, with the core leadership team residing in the bay area. The team has five members, a Product Manager and an Engineering Manager.
