University Marketing & Communications has an exciting opening for a Systems Engineer. This is a full-time, permanent position.

The University of Washington’s web properties, including its centrally- and unit-managed websites, are a vital channel for communicating with the University’s many stakeholders and constituents. Located within University Marketing and Communications (UMAC), the Web Strategy team creates, manages and supports many of the University's websites, including the University’s homepage. It is tasked with the creation and maintenance of a cohesive and compelling online experience for visitors that advances our brand promise and ensures that is implemented in a manner that empowers internal stakeholders working within the UW’s decentralized communications model.

To support that work, the Systems Engineer will help the team by providing strong infrastructure and back-end development skills that contribute to a University-wide framework that hosts the UW’s most visible web assets. Working as part of a versatile team, this position will be responsible for the creation and maintenance of our leading-edge infrastructure that supports web-related projects.

What You Will Do: Building and maintaining infrastructure (60%)

• Maintain the infrastructure that supports the UW homepage and other top-level University assets. Support the refinement of system performance to achieve responsiveness goals. • Build and maintain infrastructure that supports our key partners and help manage and maintain WordPress and Drupal multisite with colleagues embedded in partner units. • Troubleshoot issues that arise, explore solutions to complex problems, and provide technical support to faculty and staff across all levels of the University. • Research, implement and maintain technologies, tools, components and features to support and integrate the UW’s web framework and other systems which embrace best standards and practices.

Back-end systems engineering (30%)

• Plan, build and maintain workflows for both infrastructure and code. Collaborate with members of the team to support deployment workflows. • Support databases by ensuring they are in optimal condition. • Support team members by helping them build new databases, maintain existing databases, and run queries and reports. • Provide support to developers by building and maintaining custom APIs and interfacing with third party APIs. • Participate in quality assurance and testing processes, including building and maintaining CI/CD infrastructure.

Other duties (10%)

• Participate in campus communities of practice, including acting as a representative from UMAC.

Other duties as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in computer science, engineering, information management, human-computer interaction or related field with at least 2 years of experience in similar roles.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. What You Bring: Technical Skills:

• Experience using Amazon Web Services (AWS) technologies, Linux, and Python. • Working knowledge of Apache, MySQL and PHP web hosting stack. • Working knowledge of back-end scripting such as SQL, PHP, HCL, Node.js, Bash. • Working knowledge of semantic HTML, CSS pre-processors and modern web standards and best practices. • Knowledge of system and website security practices, system monitoring, and observability practices. • Familiarity with Linux environments and terminal commands. • Advanced knowledge of infrastructure-as-code and configuration management technologies. • Familiarity with PHP-FPM, HAProxy, and Varnish. • Familiarity with build pipelines, build processes and deployment methods. • Familiarity with quality assurance and testing processes and procedures. • Familiarity with Git, Google Analytics, Tag Manager and Custom Search.

General/Interpersonal Skills:

• Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills, including communicating effectively with stakeholder about priorities and deliverables. • Strong attention to detail and accuracy. • Ability to work successfully in a team environment as well as independently. • Ability to manage multiple projects at once and work under tight deadlines. • Ability to work in a complex organizational environment such as higher education and marketing organizations.

What You Can Expect:

• Cubicle/open environment, which may result in higher levels of noise and visual distractions. • Some evening and weekend hours will be required, as necessary, on short or limited notice. • This position performs an essential function. This means that the person in this role must continue to report to work if the University suspends operations because of severe weather, natural disaster or another emergency condition.
