We are looking for an experienced Environment, Health, Safety and Sustainability (EHSS) Manager to drive world class EHSS performance in a Research and Development (R&D) laboratory environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing key safety programs at our R&D facility in San Francisco and inspiring clients to advance safety culture and managing EHSS risks. The role is focused on developing and implementing EHSS programs driving business performance, continuous improvement and an actively caring culture. This position will provide support to multiple site clients to ensure EHSS requirements are implemented to the highest performance standard.

Functions (Duties/Accountabilities):

Program Support:

  • Manage programs and/or assist the program owners and site subject matter experts for Chemical Safety, OSHA Safety Programs, Biosafety, Ergonomics, Hazardous Waste ,and Environmental Programs.

  • Conduct Risk Assessments, Job Hazard Analyses, and High Hazard Material reviews.

  • Implement Lab Chemical Safety program improvements required to develop robust chemical management, hazard communication and lab safety programs.

  • Provide instructor-led training on a variety of EHSS subjects.

Client Support

  • Partner with assigned clients to drive world class EHSS performance.

  • Execute safety culture program to integrate EHSS as part of day-to-day client operations .

  • Implement risk assessment plans for clients to ensure all risks are proactively addressed and control systems are implemented and maintained.

  • Ensure all changes with potential EHSS impact are assessed and controls are established prior to implementation.

  • Ensure all hazards are identified and risks are proactively assessed.

  • Assist clients with regular inspections of the work areas.

  • Partners with clients to implement safety and environmental policies, practices, and requirements identified as part of risk assessments.

  • Provides information and communication materials to clients, assist with training, safety meetings, informational campaigns, initiatives.

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree OR

Master’s degree and 2 years of EH&S experience OR

Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of EH&S experience OR

Associate’s degree and 8 years of EH&S experience OR

High school diploma / GED and 10 years of EH&S experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Science, EHSS, engineering related fields & 3 to 5 years of directly related EHSS experience or

  • Bachelor's Degree in Science, EHSS, Engineering related field & 3 to 5 years of directly related EHSS experience.

  • Understanding of lab based EHSS disciplines and general lab operations.

  • Ability to partner with and effectively influence laboratory staff and management .

  • Strong knowledge of chemical fundamentals, or strong understanding of various chemical hazards.

  • Demonstrated success in managing Biosafety, General Industrial Safety, Risk Assessment and Change Control programs.

  • Applied knowledge and understanding of EHS principles and best practices, regulatory standards, and requirements in context of business activities.

  • Ability to take responsibility for several projects or initiatives at one time with an emphasis for quality and organization.

  • Good mechanical proficiency, ability and willingness to perform hands-on work.

  • Strong verbal & written communication skills, ability to communicate within departments, with scientists, engineers, and management.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software systems.

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
