Course Description: This Contracted Faculty of Practice (CFP) position includes both teaching and non-teaching responsibilities in the Theatre and Dance program at Concordia University. Instructional needs include Stagecraft and Scenic Design. Non-instructional responsibilities include serving as the Technical Director for all theatre and dance productions including successful coordination of all technical elements for productions and events, in collaboration with the Production Coordinator(s). This position reports to the Program Chair in the Theatre and Dance program. Anticipated start August 1, 2024. Course Modality: Traditional Face-to-Face Pre-Written Course: Yes Total Compensation: $1,000 per Credit # of Credits: 12 THR251 Stagecraft Fall Semester: 9/3/2024-12/18/2024; Tuesday/Thursday 1:45pm-3:20pm THR355 Scenic Design Spring Semester: 1/6/2025-4/30/2025; Tuesday/Thursday 1:45pm-3:20pm Program/College: The Bachelor of Arts in Theatre program at CSP is the natural jumping-off point for creative theatrical artists pursuing their craft in front of or behind the curtains. Graduates from CSP's Theatre program are successful in many theatrical career paths as well as education, business, and ministry. CSP's Theatre degree comprises of a core set of focuses, including acting, set creation, dance, improvisation, and more. This full-bodied approach to theatre is crucial for graduates to be prepared for anything the industry throws at them. Students will experience a rich blend of traditional classroom and performance opportunities that help prepare them for entry into professional careers in theatre or graduate studies. Course Instruction Responsibilities: Facilitate quality student learning through teaching assigned courses. Increase student course engagement by providing a positive and regular presence within the course (at least four days per week for online courses) by engaging students through course activities and ongoing availability to provide student support. Provide substantive and timely feedback on course assessments, following academic unit and university guidelines, within the Learning Management System, typically within five business days of the assessments' due dates. Respond to student inquiries typically within 24 hours during business days unless otherwise specified at the college level (48 hours on weekends, with closer monitoring if assignments are due during the weekend or on Monday). Work collaboratively in a supportive academic environment, partnering with academic advising, career development, and the academic team to ensure each student has the resources they need to succeed. Perform other job-related duties as assigned. Follow the university and academic unit's policies and procedures. Principal Responsibilities: Instructor: course instructional responsibilities noted above. Technical Director: 1) coordinate and facilitate all technical departments for all productions; 2) build/construct scenic and prop elements for all productions in collaboration with designers; 3) schedule, attend, and supervise strike dates/student work calls; 4) attend all production meeti gs; 5) attend all technical and dress rehearsals and performances if needed, as determined by the Production Manager. Scene Shop Manager: 1) train, teach, schedule, and supervise student shop workers; 2) mentor student designers as needed; 3) maintain safety procedures and standards in the scene shop and all theatre spaces, in collaboration with the Facilities Manager; 4) maintain cleanliness and order in the scene shop and all theatre spaces; 5) facilitate occasional additional events in theatre and dance spaces. In collaboration with the Production Coordinator: 1) hire and supervise guest designers and technicians; 2) hire student scene shop workers; 3) develop and maintain production calendars; 4) maintain budgets, purchases, and rentals for all technical departments (scenic, props, lights, sound, costumes, etc.); 5) serve as a liaison between the theatre and dance program and the Office of Conference and Events; 6) additional duties as assigned. Demonstrate a professional and collegial demeanor in working with students, colleagues, and the larger Concordia University, St. Paul learning community. Qualifications: Education Required: Master's degree in Theatre Arts or related field. Education Preferred: Terminal degree in Theatre Arts or related field. Experience Preferred: Previous teaching experience in higher education or work in professional theatre or dance. Required Significant experience and expertise in theatrical production scenic building, construction, and scenic painting. Required Basic knowledge of all technical areas and significant experience in at least one of the following: lights, props, sound, projection, and/or costumes Experience Preferred: Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets. Proficiency in QLab. Physical Demands: Physical demands typically include the construction of scenery (lifting, carrying, reaching overhead) and operating a theatrical fly system. Operation of power tools and other theatrical equipment (and exposure to resulting noise).
