Title:                          Bus Mechanic

FLSA Status:              Non-Exempt

Qualifications:

  1. Knowledge and experience in the full range of auto mechanics and body work.
  2. Valid driver's license.
  3. CDL with bus passenger endorsement.
  4. High School diploma or equivalent.
  5. Able to conduct mechanical, electrical, body, etc. repairs on buses, maintenance vehicles, and other types of vehicles.
  6. Ability to weld.
  7. Ability to carry out written and oral instruction.
  8. Ability to organize and carry out a systematic preventive maintenance plan for all school vehicles.
  9. Good health, high moral character, and good attendance record.

General Description:

Ensure that all buses and school owned vehicles are in safe and reliable condition, which in addition to emergency repairs, will include regular and periodic inspection and maintenance procedures to reduce frequency of repairs and lower cost of operation and maintenance and present no problems or interruptions to the educational programs. Promotes safety practices and procedures consistent with OSHA standards.

Essential Functions:

  1. Has access to, and knows how to use the owner's and driver's manual and the service manual provided by the vehicle manufacturer.
  2. Is responsible for the summer bus maintenance program and will have all buses ready for the annual inspection by the Ohio Highway Patrol.
  3. Keep records and make reports as required
  4. All buses: tune-ups, tires, brakes, oil changes, clutches, safety equipment, etc. 
  5. Garage equipment
  6. Order all replacement parts for buses, chassis and gear lubrication, motor oil, anti-freeze, batteries, gas and oxygen, radiators, heater cores, gasoline, and so forth, using      purchasing procedures, purchase order numbers, and so forth, as authorized by the         supervisor.
  7. Place in each bus first-aid equipment, body fluid kits, fuel sheets, and so forth.
  8. Operate snow removal equipment when emergencies exist.
  9. Performs the diagnosing and repairing of district automotive equipment.
  10. Maintain an efficient and effective system of routine automotive maintenance and preventive care.
  11. Promotes high standards of safety and good housekeeping methods in all work-connected areas.
  12. Drives bus runs as needed.
  13. Assumes responsibility of Supervisor in his absence.
  14. Assists in maintaining current inventory of supplies and equipment.
  15. Assists in setting up a system for the receipt and issuance of parts and supplies and the keeping of records and inventories.
  16. Assists in developing specifications for new vehicles.
  17. Advises the superintendent on the status of the fleet.
  18. Performs necessary body work on buses, school vehicles and mechanical equipment.
  19. Paints buses and vehicles when authorized by the bus supervisor.
  20. Be willing to improve skills through in-service, seminars, and/or professional. training.
  21. Replace tires and brakes as needed.
  22. Conducts other duties as assigned by the bus supervisor and/or superintendent of schools.
