Job Summary

There is one position available which will be filled at the level commensurate with the candidate's knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience. This role is located at Surry Power Station, Surry, VA.

The position provides support of the Electric Transmission group with focus on the programmatic functions associated with operating and maintaining a Nuclear Power Station. Under direction of supervisor or work leader, this role will perform routine assignments designed to develop professional engineering work knowledge, gain familiarity with techniques, approaches, practices and the nature of engineering systems and equipment. Limited exercise of judgment is required on details of work and in making preliminary selections and adaptations of engineering alternatives. Duties are not limited to but will include:

  • Interface will Electric Transmission and Nuclear site Engineering via conference calls, emails, and in-person meetings.

  • Provides station and switchyard technical support to the generation plant for high voltage transmission and distribution equipment.

  • Help to ensure work orders, work scheduling, Plant Issues, and Root Cause / Apparent Cause Evaluations.

  • Support Electrical Equipment and System Protection Technicians in substation inspections and field work activities.

  • Collaborate with Nuclear Engineering personnel to support electric power systems, component, and design functions.

  • Coordinate with Outage & Planning Dept. to ensure departmental work activities are scheduled via the Nuclear Workflow Management process.

  • Ability to develop effective planning, project and organizational skills

  • Ensure appropriate maintenance activities, applications, policies and associated documentation are managed and maintained IAW with Electric Transmission and Nuclear standards.

  • Infrared scans

  • Instrument check out and repair

  • HV diagnostic testing

  • Relay testing

  • Functional testing

Additional Qualifications/Responsibilities:

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Candidates should have strong engineering background, preferably in electric power systems such as engineering experience working in the Electric Utility Industry in Transmission System Operations, Substation Engineering, System Protection or Transmission Planning. Other engineering backgrounds will be considered. Candidate should possess strong knowledge of engineering principles and practices that will enable the successful candidate to progress in an engineering career series.

Engineer I : 0 - 2 years of relevant engineering experience [completed and graduated by May 31st, 2024]

Engineer II : 3+ years of significant directly related experience (3+ years of research engineering work experience on directly related projects for the electric utility industry. Work on such projects may be accomplished as part of an Engineering PhD program [completed and graduated by May 31st, 2024] on its own or in combination with additional research engineering work experience on directly related projects for the electric utility industry)

*Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications; A master’s degree can count as one year experience)

REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA:

For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:

Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or

Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or

Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or

Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.

Required KSA's Cont.

For all engineering levels:

  • Proficient Technical writing.

  • Understanding of AC/DC fundamentals, including an understanding of three-phase power systems preferred

  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of substation components and their functions preferred

  • Understanding of the protection principles and practices for transmission lines, distribution feeders, and major substation equipment preferred

  • Working knowledge of substation and transmission line one-line diagrams, and relay functional drawings

  • Ability to work proficiently with Microsoft Office applications

  • Self-motivator who can work cooperatively in a team environment, but is comfortable independently seeking knowledge and information

  • Strong time management skills with the ability to independently plan and organize work assignments

  • Provides technical consultation to other engineers and management

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Due to weight limits on equipment, weight restriction of 290 pounds applies.
