Where the team fits in

The Staff Data Engineer role sits in the Property Data teams within the PropTrack line of business, headed up by Kris Matthews.

PropTrack is REA’s property data solutions business. The acquisition of Hometrack (now ‘PropTrack’) by the REA Group in 2018 is part of a strategy to create a ‘property data powerhouse’. The capabilities required will underpin REA’s market leading position into the future, protect against new market entrants and networks as well as provide a new strategic growth plank for REA Group across Data Solutions, Products, Platforms, Insights and Analytics.

  • Invest in the reliability, quality and security of systems and data

What the role is all about

As a Staff Developer you will support the teams in the following ways:

  • Lead designing and building of major components of the new property data platform, including streaming data pipelines and highly performant APIs using Kafka, Flink, Scala, ElasticSearch and other technologies

  • Championing and driving best practices for quality data and software delivery from inception and design to build and deployment

  • Providing technical mentoring and guidance to less experienced members of the team

  • Supporting and driving continuous improvement of our production systems and being an advocate for the overall health of our systems.

  • Becoming the subject matter expert in one of the major technical competencies required in the property data space.

  • Becoming the subject matter expert of PropTrack’s property data

Who we’re looking for

  • Strong programming skills. We have systems written in Scala, Python, NodeJs and SQL, and we expect you to be an expert in at least one.

  • Good data analysis and exploration skills, e.g. SQL, Pandas, Tableau and Google BigQuery

  • Advanced data engineering - ETL/ELT, development and deployment of end to end pipelines from ingestion to consumption with experience in data streaming technologies, such as Kafka, highly regarded.

  • Advanced data modelling and proficiency in data quality frameworks and architecture.

  • Experience with modern software development techniques such as test-driven development, microservice architecture, functional programming, and continuous delivery.

  • Experience with DevOps tools and techniques, particularly AWS, CloudFormation, and Docker

  • Advanced skills in implementing solutions that scale and perform to support the needs of our customers both internal and external

  • Able to communicate and collaborate effectively with business stakeholders.

  • Able to understand business and customer needs to provide appropriate data solutions.

  • Able to mentor other engineers in a collaborative agile team environment.

  • Someone passionate about data and the latest data technology.
