Rescue Mission Alliance of Syracue Inc Chief Social Enterprise Officer in Syracuse, New York

The Rescue Mission is seeking an experienced retail professional to lead the organization’s social enterprise, including the Thrifty Shopper retail outlets as well as warehouse and logistical operations. The Thrifty Shopper is a secondhand clothing/home goods outlet, with 18 retail locations across Central NY and the Southern Tier. This position holds top-line accountability for enterprise strategic business planning, retail sales growth and overall customer satisfaction. Operationally the chief Social Enterprise Officer is responsible for effective warehouse operations and logistics. Specific areas of responsibility include Attended Donation Centers (ADCs), Trucking, Warehouse and Stores. This position is also responsible for oversight of sustainable business development opportunities, donor- and community-relations connected to retail functions, and facilities management. This position will partner with internal departments for the purpose of marketing and branding, leadership and development initiatives, and organizational advancement that can be initiated to bring in more dollars for Mission.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop sales strategies for improvement based on market research and competitor analyses and consistent with organizational strategy and objectives. Partner with organization’s executives to finalize plans.

  • Collaborate with the Senior Leadership Team to develop and implement plans for the operational infrastructure of systems, processes, and personnel designed to accommodate the rapid growth objectives of our organization.

  • Develop the distribution plan and establish procedures for maintaining high standards of distribution operations to ensure that products conform to established customer and company quality standards.

  • Formulate and recommend retail/social enterprise policies and programs that guide the organization in maintaining and improving its competitive position and the profitability of the operation. Direct implementation and execution of sales policies and practices.

  • Responsible for seeking new locations in existing and new markets. Oversees real estate negotiations and seeking legal consul on leases/purchasing property

  • Researches changing demographics in order to make better decisions on purchasing new goods

  • Direct and monitor department managers to accomplish goals. Act as liaison between department management/subordinate levels, as well as, senior/department manager levels to inform personnel of communications, decisions, policies, and all matters that affect their performance, attitudes, and results.

  • Achieve optimum employee staffing levels to meet annual budgetary plan. Hire, train, develop, and evaluate staff. Take corrective action as necessary on a timely basis and in accordance with company policy. Ensure compliance with current federal, state, and local regulations. Consult with Human Resources Department as appropriate.

  • Ensure communications are coordinated appropriately throughout and with related departments to achieve expenditure requirements, to achieve branding/marketing goals, and to strengthen workforce effectiveness.

  • Create positive change through influence of character, modeling integrity, building trust-based relationships, and organizational knowledge.

  • Foster a success-oriented, accountable environment within the organization.

  • Prepare and monitor annual budget of social enterprise/retail departments.

  • Updates the CEO and leadership teams on progress against strategic plan, performance measures, and budget as needed.

  • Assess and recommend profitability of ADC and store locations. Provide recommendations for sustainable business growth into new markets.

  • Promotes a safety-first attitude by setting a positive example and ensuring all employees are following safety policies and procedures.

  • Regular and predictable attendance is an essential requirement of the job

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent preferred in Business Management, Marketing, Retail Management, Supply Chain Management, Entrepreneurship or related field.

  • Master’s degree preferred.

  • 5-10 years of Business Management Experience

  • Minimum 5 years Retail Management Experience

  • Lease Negotiations helpful

  • Experience in working with a multimillion-dollar budget
