Job Summary and Qualifications

  • Knows departmental and hospital objectives, standards, policies and procedures Utilizes case preference cards and case cart sheets to requisition equipment and supplies required for assigned cases, and updates preference cards and sheets as needed

  • Knows and practices principles of aseptic technique to provide optimum patient care for patients of all ages. Assists with patient care including bathing, changing linens, assisting with meals, treatments, etc

  • Knows and practices principles of aseptic technique to provide optimum patient care for patients of all ages

  • Assists with room set up for cases

  • Uses initiative to be familiar with procedures and anticipates surgeons needs

  • Pass instruments, retracts, suctions, cauterizes, and cuts sutures as directed by surgeon

  • Follows guidelines for and maintains sponge, needle, sharps and instrument counts

  • Responsible for cleaning and stocking of assigned room an/or specialty carts

  • May participate as second assistant to surgeon under supervision

  • Maintains a high degree of efficiency through continuing education

  • Mandatory call required.

  • Assists with teaching students and new employees the basics of sterile technique, surgical hand scrub and gowning and gloving technique

  • Displays working knowledge on anatomy and physiology of patients of all ages: infant, child, adult, and geriatric

  • Identifies emergency situations and uses sound judgment in instituting established procedures

  • Develops and improves skills in assisting the surgeon by organizing the work, by utilizing efficiently one’s time, motion and materials

  • Knows the specific use for surgical equipment and supplies

  • Differentiates various sterilization needs for special equipment and instruments

  • Displays dexterity when using surgical instruments and knowledge of the specific steps of a surgical procedure

  • Scrubs, gowns and gloves self, surgeon and assistants

  • Sets up sterile field with instruments and equipment needed for procedure including but not limited to c-section and vaginal deliveries

  • Helps with draping the sterile field

  • Prepares the sterile dressings

  • Assists with cleaning of rooms in readiness for next case

  • Assist with stocking of supplies and specialty carts

  • Documents vital signs and observes fetal heart tones

  • Assist with patient care including bathing, changing linens, assisting with meals, treatments etc.

  • Handles and transfers dirty instruments per Joint Commission standards

  • Understands and adheres to establish policies and procedures

  • Receives instruction and guidance from RN

  • Uses tact and good judgment in dealing with patients, visitors, and hospital personnel

  • Maintains confidentiality of all information

  • Attends unit meetings and annual in-services to assure continued competency

  • Demonstrates knowledge and skill necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient being served

  • Maintains Healthstream education and department education

What qualifications you will need:

· Must be a graduate of an accredited surgical technology program and certified as a scrub tech in Indiana

· Completion of operating room technician training

  • BLS certification upon hire and maintained throughout employment with Terre Haute Regional Hospital· NRP Certification within six months of hire and maintained throughout employment with Terre Haute Regional Hospital · Compliance with all employee health testing and OSHA requirement. Able to take call independently.
