Job Title: Electrical Engineer

Location: Arnold AFB, TN

Canvas, Inc. is currently seeking an Electrical Engineer - Power Systems to join our Digital Engineering team for advanced control systems at Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC) in Tullahoma, TN. You will be working closely with IPT Leads, Chief Engineers, and team members to develop objectives, opportunities, strategies, and plans to implement power solutions for arc-heated test facilities. The arc heaters at AEDC provide aerothermal ground test simulations of hypersonic flight in support of system development by the Department of Defense (DoD) and the commercial aerospace industry. We seek team members that are driven and engaged in their work while simultaneously demonstrating high character, given that you will often be working on sensitive and unique problems which require a high degree of trust from our customers.

Responsibilities

The Electrical Engineer - Power Systems will be responsible for the development and implementation of power system models for the Digital Engineering team for advanced control systems. You will assist in identifying and implementing innovative technologies to expedite the development of solutions and improve system engineering. The candidate will work within an established and very skilled team of engineers and scientists, contributing to various projects which often require analyzing, understanding, and modeling complex, real-world phenomena to support design and decision making.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Analyze and simulate power electronics circuits for large AC power supplies

  • Collaborate with design teams to ensure developed models align with hardware behavior

  • Write, test, and document simulated power models according to development standards

  • Perform harmonic, power quality, load flow, and transient stability studies for HVDC rectifiers and other AC-DC converter-based power sources

    Additional responsibilities the Electrical Engineer - Power Systems will be required to execute:

  • Resolve technical issues that may affect development or performance of the system

  • Conduct and participate in technical exchange meetings and working groups

  • Develop and present technical and status briefings to Senior Leadership

  • Establish a supporting infrastructure and environment that uses models to inform decisions points and support collaboration and communication across all stakeholders

    Minimum Education/Experience:

  • 2+ years of relevant experience that includes working with electrical power systems

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field

  • Strong knowledge in MATLAB/Simulink

  • Familiarity with common industry instrumentation (pressure transducers, thermocouples, strain gauges, flow meters, etc.)

  • Strong understanding in electrical theories - time/frequency domains, 3-phase power, signal rectification, power electronics, semiconductor characteristics, etc.

  • Experience modeling/simulating behaviors of electrical power systems

  • Familiarity with industry standards and guides such as NESC, IEEE, etc.

  • Ability to work independently or with a team, demonstrate strong initiative, and organize all tasking with minimal supervision

  • Written and oral communication skills, including the ability to express technical ideas

  • US Citizen

    Preferred Education/Experience:

  • 5+ years of relevant experience that includes analysis/modeling/simulation of electrical power systems including multi-pulse silicon-controlled rectifiers (SCRs) and other high-voltage rectifying circuits

  • PhD or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field

  • Proficiency in using MATLAB/Simulink for electrical system modeling and simulation

  • Design experience using high performance digital control techniques for power converters

  • Previous experience within the field of power electronics controls and test facility applications

  • Knowledge and understanding of dynamic electrical system modeling for real-time, digital engineering environments such as Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL)

  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration

    Required Security Level: Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance
