JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

We are searching for an Occupational Safety/Environmental Health Specialist to join our Safety Division at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL’s purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC).

You will:

  • Promote the advancement of ARL’s safety culture and assist with the implementation of Environmental Health and Safety programs.

  • Conduct facility inspection and evaluate programs, policies and practices to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

  • Update Emergency Response Plans, conduct drills and respond to incidents.

  • Ensure chemical safety in ARL facilities through maintenance of Safety Data Sheet database, waste disposal, and chemical inventories.

  • Maintain supply of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and First Aid Supplies and distribute item as needed.

  • Coordinate dangerous good shipments in accordance with DOT and IATA dangerous good regulations.

  • Proactively promote safety programs through safety training, regular e-mail publicity, postings and focused meetings.

    This position will be filled at the intermediate professional level, which minimally requires a Bachelor’s degree or higher plus one year of experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required skills/experience areas include:

  • Knowledge of OSHA regulatory requirements; experience in conducting audits and inspections; and excellent computer skills, with knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook).

  • You must be able to communicate effectively, both verbal and written, to create and deliver presentations.

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply.

  • This position may require that you operate a motor vehicle as part of the job duties; a valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to a standard background check.

Preferred skills/experience areas include:

  • Experience in environmental management, chemical safety, waste handling/disposal, and hazardous materials transportation is preferred.

  • Prior work in a Department of Defense (DoD) setting and/or in a lab environment in an academic setting is helpful.

  • A Graduate Safety Professional (GSP) or Associate Safety Professional (ASP) certification, with the goal of working toward Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification, is preferred.

  • Active government security clearance

  • This position will require periodic travel to remote locations to conduct facility inspection and evaluate programs, policies and practices to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements

Your work location will be fully on-site; located in State College, Pennsylvania.

The pay range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$51,000.00 - $74,000.00
