JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Animal Resource Program at Penn State seeks a responsible and experienced professional to assist the Attending Veterinarians.

Responsibilities: Responsibilities include the following:

  • Coordination and implementation of rodent colony health surveillance activities

  • Treatment of ill or injured animals, providing technique training to individuals and small groups, sanitation and maintenance of specialized veterinary facilities and equipment

  • Maintaining drug and equipment inventories and animal health record keeping including making database entries.

Duties will primarily involve working with rodents and occasionally other species including laboratory, agricultural and wildlife animals, and will include animal handling, blood sampling, anesthesia and monitoring, aseptic surgery, pre- and post-operative care, and other clinical procedures.

The position requires frequent written and verbal communication with university investigators and research staff.

Education and Experience: This position requires a minimum of an Associate's Degree or higher and 4 + years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience .

The successful candidate must possess or obtain certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science within one year from date of hire.

Excellent communication skills, ability to multitask, proficiency with basic computer operations, organizational skills, and the ability to work as part of a team as well as independently are required.

Prior experience working with rodents in a research facility is strongly preferred as well as demonstrated competence with common rodent handling and sampling techniques. Prior experience with agricultural animals and/or veterinary technician certification is preferred. Prior teaching experience of any kind, but particularly individual or small group hands on training, is desirable. Additional training as a veterinary technician is beneficial.

Background Check: T his position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in ad dition to standard background checks.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$42,100.00 - $61,000.00
