Position Summary Information

Position Summary

Performs support functions for the Campus Safety Department under direction of and reporting to the Director of Campus Safety. Duties include patrolling campus buildings, responding to emergencies and enforcing the laws of New York State and the policies of Utica University.

Major Responsibilities

• Patrols campus by foot/vehicle to observe and report suspicious and/or criminal activities, responds to emergencies, documents all incidents and takes appropriate actions as necessary.

• Observes, reports and initiates corrective actions on safety or fire violations. Inspects fire extinguishers ensuring they are fully charged and properly located. Responds to fire alarms, ensures proper evacuation and initiates appropriate action (i.e. incident reports).

• Issues appropriate tickets for parking and moving violations.

• Assists students and staff as needed with room lockouts, escorts, information requests, access to academic areas, and vehicle problems, etc.

• Enforces the laws of New York State and the rules and policies of Utica University.

• Provides quality customer service (defined as friendly, courteous, respectful, and helpful) to students and all other members of the university community with whom there is contact, as well as when representing the university to external organizations or individuals.

• Provides direction to and supervision of Safety Officers assigned within his/her shift.

• Coordinates working schedule, training, and post assignments with the Captain.

• Inspects Safety Officers assigned to shift for proper hygiene, uniform appearance, and job knowledge at the beginning of shift.

• Takes an active role in the development of the department’s strategic and operational plans as required by department leadership. Works closely with department supervisor to develop and implement operational goals that support departmental success.

• Responsible for working with supervisor and other team members to achieve successful results on all established individual and departmental goals and key performance indicators.

• May perform other duties as assigned.

Driving Responsibilities

• Current US valid driver’s license is required.

• Must maintain a clean driving record as defined by university insurance carrier guidelines. Motor vehicle record will be monitored regularly using NYS License Event Notification Service or License Monitor, Inc. for out of state licenses.

Education & Experience Qualifications

• Minimum high school education or GED required.

• One year experience as officer in campus safety setting required.

• Completion of the New York State Security Guard Training or prior law enforcement certification required.

Minimum Skills/Abilities

• Must be able to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students, outside vendors, local law enforcement agencies, local fire agencies, and local emergency agencies.

• A strong commitment to diversity and work continually to enhance diversity of our students, faculty, and staff.

• Must be familiar with hand tools, telephone and radio equipment, calculator, copier and a computer.

• Must be able to work flexible hours if necessary.
