Eaton Corporation Senior Firmware Engineer - Power Electronics in Vantaa, Finland

What you’ll do:

Eaton´s new campus for its critical power systems in Vantaa, Finland, integrates all current activities into a much larger site. Campus is completed by the end of 2023, and the 16,500 m² site will house research and development, manufacturing, warehousing, sales and service under one roof and will create up to 100 additional jobs. As one of the world’s largest manufacturers of three-phase uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), Eaton’s expansion in this area is driven by strong business growth and the demand for systems that ensure business continuity. Situated in a prime location next to the Helsinki airport, the Vantaa facility will serve as Eaton’s Critical Power Solutions headquarters and a center of excellence for data centers.

As Senior Firmware Engineer you will work on UPS products especially from a power electronics perspective. Here are some key areas you can expect to gain expertise in:

  • Embedded Systems and Firmware Development: focusing on control algorithms and protection mechanisms for UPS systems, to become an expert in state-of-the-art power electronics firmware design.

  • Power Electronics: working with power conversion technologies, including rectifiers, inverters, and DC-DC converters.

  • Battery Management Systems (BMS): work on integrating and optimizing BMS for UPS applications, ensuring reliable power storage and delivery.

  • Digital Control Techniques: implement and refine digital control techniques for power electronics, such as pulse-width modulation (PWM) and digital signal processing (DSP).

  • System Integration: collaborating with hardware engineers, you’ll ensure seamless integration of firmware with hardware components, enhancing overall system performance.

  • Troubleshooting and Testing: diagnosing and resolving issues in complex power electronics systems, with testing and debugging, also testing your implementation on advanced hardware-in-the-loop simulators in a modern electrical laboratory.

  • Industry Standards and Compliance: become familiar with industry standards and regulatory requirements for UPS systems, ensuring your designs meet safety and performance criteria.

  • Innovation and Next-Generation Technologies: be involved in developing next-generation technologies for power management and energy efficiency. You’ll experience how model-based design can be applied to complex power electronics applications.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's/Master's Degree in Electrical or related Engineering degree.

  • Several years of industry work experience in embedded firmware/power electronics development.

  • Ability to demonstrate strong knowledge and experience embedded firmware/power electronics development consisting of state machines, control algorithms and user interfaces.

  • Extensive Experience in C++ and knowledgeable writing automated tests.

  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of 3-phase power systems and work in lab environment.

  • Ability to read schematics and interpret the behavior of electrical systems.

  • Knowledge of embedded real time operating system (FreeRTOS).

  • Knowledge of modern software development processes. Experience with standard dev tools: revision control (Git), issue tracking (Jira), profilers, debugging, etc.

  • Ability to demonstrate excellent written and verbal communications in English,

  • Position requires an individual who is self-motivated, team-oriented, proactive, attentive to detail, and able to overcome obstacles to meet schedule requirements.

  • Nice to have skills:

  • Experience in debugging and fixing of complex state machines and closed loop controls.

  • Design experience with UPS and/or power electronic products for high reliability.

  • Experience with Model-based state machine design.

  • Ability to analyze and troubleshoot analog and digital control circuitry.

  • Experience working on Hardware-In-Loop (HIL) systems.

  • Experience with Model-based state machine design.

  • Knowledge of Linux operating system.

  • Experience working on cross-functional, world-wide development projects.
