The Opportunity

Abt Global seeks a qualified Methane Emissions Reduction Regional Coordinator for the five-year USAID-funded Sustainable Municipal Solid Waste Management and Partnership (SELARAS) in Indonesia. Under the supervision of the Regional Manager, with technical direction from the Jakarta-based Senior Emissions Reductions Specialist, you will provide technical leadership, direction, and coordination for the Activity’s methane emissions tracking and reduction activity components. This specific objective is focused on local stakeholder engagement and capacity building in support of improving the emissions models used for methane tracking and abatement from the solid waste sector. As part of the Activity’s coordination team, you will collaborate with team members, ensure technical quality and timeliness of delivery, and represent the Activity’s emissions tracking and reduction project across key stakeholder groups and target geographies as you engage them and build their capacity.

The position will be based in Surakarta, Central Java . The tentative start date is December 2024.

Core Responsibilities

  • Provide technical coordination, direction, and support across the Activity’s methane emissions tracking and reduction efforts components from the solid waste sector, including local capacity building assistance.

  • Collaborate with waste management staff, officials from both the private and public sectors, project developers, informal sector workers, and other groups (NGOs and academia) involved in collecting, treating, recycling, and disposing waste to

  • Gather data on waste management from each locality

  • Conduct surveys to assess existing knowledge on waste management strategies, the impact of waste on climate change, and methane mitigation waste measures.

  • Do outreach to inform them of ongoing activities

  • Facilitate resolution of technical issues at the city/district level.

  • As part of the Activity team, contribute to effective collaboration on technical work, including emissions modeling improvement, data collection and quality assurance, and technical assistance.

  • Assist the Senior Emissions Reductions Specialist in achieving core results including timely/effective implementation of activities to achieve program objectives.

  • Assist in the development and implementation of one or more carbon credit projects, including coordinating with local project staff to collect data necessary for project registration and assisting with third-party verification.

  • Work with the Senior Emissions Reductions Specialist to complete program deliverables and reporting, while meeting high quality standards set by USAID and Abt Global.

  • Engage and collaborate with stakeholders including USAID, Government of Indonesia, civil society organizations (CSOs), private sector, academic institutions, and other groups.

What We Value

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in environmental policy, climate change science, sustainable development, public administration, or related field.

  • At least 5 years of experience managing governance-related and/or sustainable development activities, particularly at the subnational level.

  • At least 5 years of demonstrated success engaging communities in waste management or similar environmentally focused issues.

  • Strong understanding of Indonesia’s climate change mitigation and environmental protection landscape, including national and subnational policies related to greenhouse gas emissions, solid waste management, plastic waste pollution, or similar topics.

  • Demonstrated expertise in climate change adaptation and mitigation, particularly in technical areas such as methane abatement policy and technology, sustainable solid waste management strategies, climate finance, carbon credits, governance as it relates to climate mitigation, data-driven solutions for climate mitigation and emissions tracking, nature-based solutions, locally led adaptation, and/or technical capacity building.

  • Demonstrated experience in data collection and data quality assurance, preferably in climate mitigation, sustainability, or solid waste management fields.

  • Experience serving in technical or management roles with USAID or other donor funded projects.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage and engage with diverse groups of stakeholders, particularly with municipalities and regencies.

  • Advanced proficiency in speaking and writing in English. Fluency in Bahasa.
