General Description

This position is responsible for supporting the execution of regional and local strategy by leveraging analytics and serve as a catalyst to optimize multiple customer journeys to grow Manulife Asia’s presence. The Chief Analytics Officer (CAO) serves as a strategic thought partner to guide business decisions at the executive level and provide meaningful, actionable data, AI and analytics - driven insights.

The role reports jointly to the Asia Chief Marketing officer and the Global Head of Advanced Analytics. While organizationally the Analytics function reports into Marketing it is responsible for companywide AI & Analytics engagement & delivery.

Responsibilities

Previously, the company’s analytics function grew in local markets. With the scale of our operations and the opportunity to leverage the advancements in capabilities and technology in the analytics place. The role now requires a leader who can transform the way data and analytics are used to drive the organization forward, with primary responsibilities that include;

  • Refining and building an end to end analytics operating model across different markets

  • Accelerating the pace of analytics utilization across the company by building a best-in-class Advanced Analytics organization

  • Partners closely with relevant business leaders to objectively define and assess performance, drive actionable insights and proactively enable decision making through analytics

  • Define, develop and implement advanced analytics processes, methods and tools for consistency and standardization through the entire organization

  • Develop and implement plans for talent development and management

  • Proactively identify opportunities to ultimately optimize insights, analytics and data to provide holistic business solutions

  • Foster analytical innovation and promote the sharing of analytics knowledge and best practices within the organization organization with acommercial business context

Accountabilities (Individual / Shared)

The Chief Analytics Officers’ responsibilities include being the strategic and operational lead for the Asia Region and all its markets. The CAO must establish herself themselves as an integral member of the Asia leadership team with a strong influence over the success of the region and each local market.

Individual Accountabilities:

  • Deliver end to end value to local markets by sharing best practices. Specifically articulating various levels of strategy and the data and analytics capabilities needed to deliver the value and support its execution by working closely with the market leads and senior management

  • The role covers all functional areas where analytics can power business outcomes i.e. Marketing, Distribution, Operations, Claims, Underwriting, Risk etc.

  • Leverage data to understand customer journey and apply Advanced Analytics (AA) to unlock data monetization by optimizing each journey

  • Lead proactive development of solution methodologies and driving processes with detailed execution plans and priorities that enable the organization to implement more advanced and productive customer and advisor relationships

  • Build Advanced Analytics CoE to collect, cleanse, merge, augment, store and distribute data from local markets

  • Build analytics talents who can conduct rapid diagnostics, inject analytical rigor to validate and prioritize the opportunities, and work with market leaders to drive execution

  • Key analytics priorities include optimization of Customer Portfolio Management, Policy Experience improvement, Claims/Underwriting predictive analytics, Fraud detection, and seller performance optimization (focusing on sales activation)

  • Develop the analytics solutions / products per value stream and associated infrastructure

Key Shared Accountabilities:

  • Work closely with the regional functional leaders, local market analytics leaders and local market business and functional leaders to deliver said outcomes

  • Support the deliveryof Manulife’s strategic goals which include specific targets within markets and across segments/functions, measured by “Value Enabled by Analytics’

  • Ensuring the analytics capability roll out that are aligned to market and regional strategic priorities.

  • Support the global initiatives on establishing data governance across Asia markets by partnering with the Asia Data Office

  • Continue the talent upgrade and talent build for the Asia markets and drive advancement of Asia Advanced Analytics by launching clear and standardized AA career framework

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies/Education:

  • Deep knowledge and expertise of the business, political landscape and big picture and conditioned to navigate and influence

  • Able to envision the business strategy, seeking out opportunities for analytics to contribute to business outcomes

  • At least 15 years’ experience in a senior leadership position managing an analytics team. Proven experience improving the efficiency of an analytics function and its effect on organizational performance

  • Strong relationship management skills in working and influencing the highest level of the organization, including senior level management across multiple markets

  • Excellent project management skills and the ability to work with field management and analysts across multiple countries and complex processes

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics, Finance, Computer Science, Economic Sciences, Mathematics, Engineering, Actuarial Sciences, or related fields

  • Expert understanding of programming stats, machine learning, data visualization, exploratory data analysis, model production, insight generation and data wrangling

  • Excellent communication and the ability to effectively translate and explain technical cross-product customer/advisor analytics and complex statistical models to diverse stakeholders including senior management, regional teams, local market leads, employer groups, brokers, consultants, and other staff

  • Ability to effectively persuade others to listen, commit, and act on a new approach

  • Fierce desire to be a critical team member in a rapidly growing business.

  • Proven relationship skills including the ability to act as a liaison between staff and all internal and external customers and vendors

  • Strong customer focus and dedication to quality

  • Ability to communicate ideas orally and in writing. Strong writing and editing skills

Problems/Challenges:

  • Ability drive transformation in a regulated industry

  • Lead change management effort to instal an ‘analytics driven’ decision making mindset and migrate to advanced analytics usage (from Business Intelligence)

  • Ability to work though ambiguity and limited/incomplete data sets, and provide a solution that is practical and can be implementable

  • Ability to develop and leverage relationships; must possess deep functional expertise in data and analytics, balanced with a track record of building high trust relationships. Should have a proven collaborative approach; openly share information and is receptive to other’s ideas
