PURPOSE

The Aviation Safety Officer plans, implements, and coordinates safety and environmental programs and ensures compliance with required regulations, procedures, and policies with primary focus on aviation. This position will be member of a Public Safety/Emergency Management response team.

DESCRIPTION

The Aviation Safety Officer, under the direction of the Chief Pilot, plans, implements, and coordinates safety and environmental programs and ensures compliance with required regulations, procedures, and policies with primary focus on aviation. Facilitates identification of safety and environmental risks and promotes reduction or elimination of potential accidents, occupational injuries, illnesses, deaths, and safety-related financial losses. Conducts safety assistance visits and training to ensure implementation of and compliance with safety directives.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Safety - 60%

  • Shall ensure proper industrial safety procedures are followed in accordance with assigned contract and appropriate federal, state, and local regulations, rules, and procedures.

  • Provide technical support in all types of safety/environmental issues such as data gathering, training, and correspondence for assigned customers, etc.

  • When needed, perform duties as an active member of an aircraft accident board.

  • Develop required reports, conduct briefings, safety training, and when directed conduct quarterly safety and semi­annual safety stand down meetings.

  • Maintain and update all Lone Star UAS specific safety manuals and procedures.

  • Assist in maintaining accident and incident records, files, and reports. Requires data entry and corrections to files on an as needed basis.

  • Conduct safety audits, fire extinguisher inspections, and inspections of all first aid kits and other safety related equipment.

  • Collaborate with TAMU-CC Environmental, Health, and Safety on any local, state, or federal audits or inspections.

  • Process occupational hazard reports including investigating the hazard and ensuring mitigations are in place.

    Administrative - 20%

  • Provide administrative support including maintaining all departmental files, records, and publications needed to support organizational activities and to meet applicable requirements.

  • Provide written reports which are clear, concise, and meaningful for all ground / aviation safety and environmental matters.

  • Develop and maintain information technology work orders and confirm when work has been properly completed.

  • Maintains current knowledge of laws and requirements imposed upon the agency.

    Operations - 20%

  • Maintain and log all purchase request items when received.

  • Assists in maintaining comprehensive manuals, guides, checklists, presentations, procedures, and policies for programs as well as the review of proposed research and sponsored program projects to determine impact on environmental health, safety, and risk management.

  • This position is a required member of a Public Safety/Emergency Management response team.

    WHAT YOU WILL NEED

  • Bachelor's degree.

  • Seven (7) years' experience in Safety Management, Industrial Hygiene, Aviation Safety and Environmental management or related.

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for minimum qualifications:

  • Masters degree and five (5) years of experience in Safety Management, Industrial Hygiene, Aviation Safety and Environmental management or related.

  • Overnight travel associated with position may be up to 25%

  • This assignment will require deployment to austere environments after a declared emergency. Deployments may last up to 60 days.

  • This position may require working in austere conditions as it relates to emergency management.

  • Day travel between UAS ranges and campus locations is likely.

  • Must be knowledgeable of OSHA, EPA, FAA, NTSB, and other applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

  • Must be experienced with aircraft accident investigation and reporting.

  • Knowledge of how to acquire Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and understand regulatory requirements is required.

    WHAT THEY WOULD LIKE TO SEE

  • Experience in the technical field of aviation safety and accident prevention and experience in use of DOD, FAA, NTSB, or ICAO documentation is required

  • Computer skills in MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint

  • Knowledge of OSHA and Environmental regulations is required

  • Professional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) preferred.

  • Graduate of a Military Aviation Safety Course.

    SALARY: $7,083.33 Monthly ($85,000 Annual, Approximately)
