What we want

The veterinary technician I, under the supervision of a veterinary technician II or higher is responsible for aiding faculty, staff and veterinary students with patient care, treatments, and minor/endoscopic procedures. Helps to maintain a clean sanitary and well-organized service area within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.

Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by the direct supervisor. May require working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, or on-call duty. Provides quality customer service to internal and external customers/clients.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Associate's degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or related area, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic computer skills

  • Working knowledge of equipment used in a veterinary teaching hospital.

  • Thorough knowledge of equipment used in area of specialization.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of canine and feline anatomy and physiology.

  • Able to appropriately handle and restrain feline and canine patients with methods of fear free and/or feline friendly.

  • Ability to communicate professionally, effectively, and positively with all individuals in a veterinary medical teaching hospital setting.

  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology, Biomedical Science, Animal Science, or related area.

  • One year experience in a veterinary medical setting. Certification as a Licensed Veterinary Technician.

  • Knowledge of feline and canine endocrinology, respiratory, urinary, gastroenterology, infectious disease, and endoscopy procedures.

Responsibilities:

  • Internal Medicine Duties: Prepare patient for endoscopy procedures. Assist residents with various endoscopic procedures. (Tracheoscopy, Bronchoscopy, Rhinoscopy, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Cystoscopy, Vaginoscopy, etc.) Aseptically cold sterilize bronchoscope for Tracheoscopy, Bronchoscopy with collection of diagnostic samples. Perform aseptic surgical preparation of patient for Esophagostomy Tube Placement, Laparoscopic Liver Biopsy, Endoscopic Assisted Cystotomy/Percutaneous Cystolithotomy, Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt Coil Embolization, Ureteral Stent Placement, Urethral Stent Placement, cystoscopy/vaginoscopy, etc. Assist in the scheduling anesthesia for endoscopic or surgical procedures, providing communication to all areas of the hospital. Instruct, guide, and supervise veterinary students, interns, and residents in proper technique of minor procedures such as joint taps, infectious disease blood cultures, transtracheal wash, endotracheal wash, male/female urinary catheterization, fine needle aspirates, blood smear, etc. Maintain and process endoscopy equipment. Ensure necessary equipment is re-sterilized and available for following day of a procedure. Submit purchase orders for specialty equipment for procedures.

  • Clinical Responsibilities: Instruct, guide, and supervise veterinary students, interns, and residents in proper clinical techniques to support patient care. Monitor patients to detect any change in their clinical status and keep patients clean. Provide physical restraint for the safe handling of patient animals. Perform or assist with collection and submission of patients’ blood, urine, feces, and tissues. Assist and instruct in the performance of diagnostic procedures and examinations. Administer patient treatment following a clinician’s orders without direct supervision. Place and maintain IV catheters. Assist in all Internal Medicine services as needed, providing technical support due to staff outages or caseload. Provide assistance to other services as case load permits.

  • Teaching, Research, and Clinical Trials: Participate in the instruction of technical skills in labs and seminars as needed. Participate in clinical trials and basic research programs as needed within the terms of employment (<10%). Assist in clinical trials and research efforts to include record keeping and data management.

  • Maintaining safe, clean, sanitary work environment: Maintains a sanitary and well-organized service within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Restock supplies and medical inventory as needed. Clean, disinfect and repackage items for sterilization specific to the service. Maintain equipment within the service area.

  • Required training, compliance, and administrative procedures: Remains current with safety classes, rabies prophylaxis, Radiation safety training, Infection Control, Aseptic Technique and maintains certification or licensure where appropriate. Ensures all hospital fees are correctly captured and entered into hospital electronic medical records system. Enters worked time and leave entry into Workday in a timely manner. Answers email correspondence Assists with school and hospital accreditations and inspections (AVMA, IACUC, AAHA, AAALAC, etc.). Performs duties as assigned as an essential employee of the VMTH.
