Summary This is a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed 4 years, 1 day). Term appointments are non-status, non-permanent appointments. The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. The Office of Under Secretary for Museum and Culture (OUSMC), Reckoning With Our Racial Past, (RWORP) which supports the Deputy Secretary/Chief Operating Officer, four Under Secretarial Offices and select units. Responsibilities This position promotes the education of Smithsonian staff and visitors in one or more specialized topics. As Education Specialist you will contribute to and develop academic research, exhibitions, public programs, digital presence, educational programs and publications. In this position, you will perform the following duties: Develop innovative, meaningful and engaging virtual experiences for learners of all ages. Develop, evaluate and deliver instruction including education experiences, activities, programs and digital products for K-12 teachers and college students in areas of specialization. Stay informed of trends and innovations in museum education, education technology and K-16 education policies, to maintain supportive relationships with various partnerships and communities for the purposes of building professional development, outreach, partnerships and reputation building. Oversee purchasing and contracting work of staff working on digital programs and associated equipment purchasing. Serve as a contracting officer’s representative (COR). Work with management to develop draft annual budgets for digital learning efforts. Qualifications Basic Qualifications Requirements: Degree: that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position. or Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described in A above. In addition to the basic qualification requirement above: GS-11 Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position Specialized experience is defined as 1) creating educational content for students and teachers (from kindergarten to 12th grade) in a museum or cultural/educational institution, which includes researching, writing, and producing materials; and 2) managing educational programs for teachers and students, from planning and execution to evaluation, while also handling budgets for program and material development. Or Education: Three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
