Job Overview

The Special Events Worker performs their duties in accordance with a detailed plan to support academic, social, and cultural events - general and specific cleaning, deliveries, set ups and break downs of equipment, such as tables, chairs, podiums, stages and coat racks. I

In emergency or unusual situations, they perform other tasks as assigned, including but not limited to custodial responsibilities of floor care, classroom cleaning, restroom cleaning, snow and ice removal and clean up associated with water or fire damages.

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

The Special Events Worker, reporting directly to the Special Events Custodial Supervisor along with 5 to 10 other special event workers, works both alone and with others. Under certain circumstances not limited to emergency snow removal, spills, and flooding, they respond to requests from the Work Management Center, the Custodial Manager, the Director of Facilities Management, the Resource Manager, the Infrastructure Manager and other department managers as may be required.

Their work constitutes a direct service of the department to ensure a comfortable, safe and clean environment in which the University community can live, learn and work. The Special Events Worker ensures compliance with all applicable rules and regulations; uses and disposes of materials in accordance with applicable environmental safety and control regulations; keeps abreast of changes and new developments in applicable codes and regulations; and dresses in proper uniform and carries valid University identification at all times.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • High School diploma or certified equivalency

  • Preference for one year of custodial work experience.

  • A valid driver’s license issued by the District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia

  • Ability to read and understand product label instructions and to read and understand University policies and procedures

  • Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team

  • Ability to relate custodial and maintenance problems clearly to supervisor and/or the Work Management Center

The candidate selected must complete a training program in special events and building cleaning.

The Special Events Worker is considered an emergency position that requires the incumbent to report to work during inclement weather at the regularly scheduled time regardless of whether the University is closed, opening late or closing early. They must be flexible in order to accommodate emergency situations, such as staffing shortages and snow removal.

As well, they are required carry a pager or radio while on duty and to respond when contacted’ and may be required to serve as team leader of the Special Event Workers in the absence of the Special Event II Worker.
