Job Title: Sensory Scientist

Job Summary : The Sensory Scientist will lead the internal and external sensory testing protocol for all Wawa branded products. Identifies, develops, and leverages best in class sensory evaluation techniques and methods to be used in the Wawa product development process. Contribute to Innovation Process to inform future scope of innovation and quality improvements.

  • Lead and manage sensory test design, execution, analysis, and interpretation for all Wawa Branded products. Includes internal and external panels as well as descriptive analysis panels and home-use studies. Provide direction to Product Development and Category Teams.

  • Determine appropriate sensory methodologies as well as design, conduct and interpret data to reduce business risk in decision making and enhance product knowledge.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and proficiency of coffee standards.

  • Analyze key foodservice industry trends and assess the opportunity for Wawa. Use data to determine a strategic recommendation of future product opportunities, methodology to vet and test and re-prioritize to best meet customer and business needs

  • Lead the product development function for the accelerated innovation process and provide ongoing project management throughout the testing phase. Collaborate with Project Manager of Product Innovation Testing to ensure successful test implementation and documentation to create a product pipeline for future deployment.

  • Facilitate and lead concept planning sessions to identify budget driving and LRP initiatives, align on priorities and adjust competitive landscape to inform a sustainable business plan.

  • Provide continuous evaluation of competitive products and vendor capabilities in order to lead efforts to improve quality of existing products within core programs. Understand the competitive environment by performing product evaluations, attend benchmarking trips and conduct trend analysis.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in food science, Certified Culinary Scientist, Certified Research Chef, Sensory Design or related field preferred

  • Minimum 7 years in food and beverage sensory test design, execution, analysis, and interpretation

  • Proven project management skills and experience

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
