Henry Ford Health System Surgical Assistant - Certified First Assist - Contingent - Days in West Bloomfield, Michigan
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Surgical Assistant (SA) works under the supervision and direction of the operating surgeon and in collaboration with the health care team members, to carry out technical behaviors that assist the surgeon in performing a safe operative procedure. If Certified SA (CSA), the national certification is to be maintained. A copy of the national certification documentation will be maintained in the employee's file. The SA possesses a working knowledge of operating room procedures with respect to attire, infection control and regulatory compliance. The SA performs other surgical team duties, such as, scrub/ turnover, and other duties as assigned when not functioning in the role of the first assistant. As a member of the HFHS staff, daily assignments will be made based on departmental need. The SA must have the ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon, other team members and the patient, with respect to the requirements of a particular surgical procedure. The SA must maintain procedure knowledge related to normal /abnormal anatomy; ability to anticipate and provide for potential complications; confirms that instrumentation is appropriate for patient, age, and size. Reports directly to the OR Director/Manager and/or assigned specialty team leadership. The daily contact with medical, residents, administrative, nursing support staff and vendors will be collegial, professional and in accordance with HFHS customer service and service excellence standards.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
The SA is a perioperative experienced Surgical Technologist who works in collaboration with the surgeon and the healthcare team to achieve optimal patient outcomes. The SA must have acquired the necessary knowledge, judgment, and skills specific to the expanded role of SA and has successfully completed a first assistant training program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP). Intraoperatively, the SA practices at the direction of the surgeon and does not concurrently function as a scrub tech.
The SA is sponsored in the operating room by the medical director of surgical services at the site during completion of the clinical case volume and/or clinical case hours required to obtain certification.
Certification as a CSA is desired from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). A SA who is not certified upon hire will have 1 year from date of hire to complete the certification. All staff within the current job description will continue to perform in the job classification and known as a SA.
The CSA is a Surgical Technologist with perioperative experience who has successfully completed a SA program (didactic and clinical requirements) that meets CAAHEP standards and has successfully completed the certification program.
BLS required and must be maintained per hospital policy.
CALL-HOURS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
May be assigned to cover additional HFHS facilities in the role of STFA.
Hours assigned as needed to meet the needs of the department, may include rotating to off shifts, off shifts.
Expectation of holiday coverage.
Call responsibilities expectation to meet the department need.
Ability to function in a fast-paced environment

Must be available for on-call support systems.
Demonstrated ability to build effective relationships with colleagues, leadership, end users and physicians.
