Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, performs basic nursing procedures necessary to care for, comfort, and protect patients. Performs phlebotomy orthostatic blood pressures, collects specimens, EKGs, CPR, and glucometers, and assists physicians and nurses in various situations. Responsible for transporting patients to other departments and/or patient floors. Maintains patient and treatment rooms in a clean and orderly condition.

PRINCIPAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Compliance with all Winchester Hospital policies and the Code of Business Conduct. As required, maintains tuberculosis testing. Takes responsibility for own safety and the safety of patients, patients’ families, co-workers, physicians, and other customers.

  • Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, the technician provides for the care, comfort, and safety of assigned patients. The technician performs phlebotomy and orthostatic blood pressure and collects specimens, EKGs, and glucometers.

  • Observe patients and report reactions or changes in condition to the assigned nurse.

  • Assist Registered Nurses with undressing patients, cleaning wounds, and obtaining blood and urine specimens. Assist in holding pediatric and adult patients for IV starts, lumbar punctures, thoracentesis, chest tube insertion, epistaxis control, foreign body removal, etc.

  • Respond to patients’ requests and/or call lights to determine patients’ needs and relay information to the assigned nurse.

  • Maintaining patients' rooms by disposing of linen, stocking supplies and linens, emergency equipment, and cleaning counter surfaces.

  • Provides essential emotional support to patient and family. Make periodic checks to solicit patient needs.

  • When admitted, transport patients by stretcher or wheelchair to and from Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Cardiology, or to the floors.

  • Assist in the discharge of a patient by removing the IV, assist in the dressing of the patient, and assist the patient to the car when necessary.

  • Assists Physician and or Registered Nurse in procedures including CPR, moderate sedation, casting, crutch fitting and walking, slings, various splints, knee immobilizers, soft/rigid collars, shoulder immobilizers, clavicle splints, ortho shoes, and Jones dressing.

  • Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, insert foley cath for female/male patients and obtain specimens. Assist Registered Nurse in obtaining cath specimens for pediatric patients.

  • Responsible for setting up the sterile field for suture kits. Assist physicians with suturing adults and pediatric patients.

  • Assist physician with GYN exams and collecting specimens. Maintains room with all GYN/Rectal equipment and supplies.

  • Covers for secretaries/liaisons when needed.

They may be asked to perform close observation or one-on-one observation on behavioral health patients or patients assessed to be safety risks.

Participates in the following:

a. Mandatory training requirements as per unit/hospital policies

b. Continuing education/in-services to enhance knowledge

c. Staff meetings

d. Performance improvement initiatives

e. Orientation of new staff, students, and/or volunteers

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • C.N.A., a nursing student with two completed clinical rotations, EMT, or equivalent

  • experience. Experience working in an emergency department is preferred.

  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology. Basic computer skills.

LIFE SUPPORT CERTIFICATION REQUIRED : Basic Life Support

AGE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: Infant, Children, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND VISUAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to stand for long periods of time. Ability to reach and grasp objects, lift and push heavy objects, and position and transfer patients. Ability to hear and communicate orally and in writing. Ability to proofread and check documents for accuracy. Ability to enter words and data into a computer. Ability to distinguish colors.

OSHA EXPOSURE: The job does involve possible exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Reports to the Assistant Nurse Manager. Not responsible for supervising the work of others.
