Joining our fast paced Food Testing Pathogens laboratory the purpose of this role is to ensure delivery of service in line with expectation of key accounts; microbiological analysis of food samples; efficient day-to-day operation of the Pathogen Laboratory and deputise for the Laboratory Coordinator when necessary. 

This is a full time permanent position working a 4 on / 4 off shift pattern - Week 1: 09:30 – 21:00 / Week 2: 10:30 – 22:00. 

  • Deputise as required for the laboratory manager including the supervision of staff in all aspects of the laboratory. 

  • Supervise and manage staff in your team to ensure efficient operation of production shift. 

  • Provide technical service to key accounts; including provision of accurate and timely results, confirmation and clarification of analytical results. 

  • Be familiar with laboratory FGS software Understand and be able to implement processes relating to sample/test data entry and ensure that key account information and contact details are accurate and kept up to date.

  • Analysis, reading and confirmation of samples and input of results data on to computer system.

  • Be able to raise non conformance documents following any non-conformance and to investigate root causes and implement actions appropriate to assist with continuous improvement.

  • Be responsible for Stock control and control culture stock delegating out if necessary. 

  • Adhere to documented procedures for all aspects of laboratory work, ensuring that all relevant information concerning samples is recorded, that samples are handled correctly, that worksheets are kept in an orderly manner and that all necessary records and quality data are maintained.

  • Carry out and read environmental monitoring samples and ensure this task is kept up to date.

  • Yearly achieving to off site location to be monitored and carried out in all areas of the laboratory. 

  • Be familiar with the contents of the Laboratory Quality Manual and comply at all times with the policies, procedures and associated documents which are referred to in the Manual in order to meet the requirements of the UKAS accreditation standard.

  • Work with the quality team to ensure that the IQC program is kept up to date read these plates within agreed timescales.

  • To be present during external audits (UKAS/RSA etc.)

  • Preparation and delivery of analytical results to defined Key Performance Indicators. A key activity for this is to ensure missing results are acted on in a timely manner using the appropriate FGS extracts and that any delays, missing results or non-confirming work are reported to the quality and ASM team without delay.

  • Resolve deficiencies in delivery of analysis through laboratory & make relevant technical improvements.

  • Degree or equivalent in Microbiology. 

  • Strong knowledge of pathogen laboratory activities. 

  • Knowledge of UKAS and ISO methods. 

  • Working experience within a laboratory. 

  • Competence in IT, including eLIMS. 

  • Knowledge of customers and sample matrices, including specific requirements on how to handle the samples. 

  • Experience in NCW/Complaints/Environmental Monitoring. 

  • Strong people management skills. 

  • Strong management skills of for performance/absence management. 

  • Full commitment to meeting customers expectation. 

  • A passion for providing a safe working environment. 

  • Ability to communicate across departments.
